“I think it’s getting better.â€? – said the Dalai Lama when asked if he thought the general state of the world was getting worse. I thought about that reply as I waited to be interrogated at the police station. There was an intoxicated man further down the hall, crying, banging and screaming for someone to let him out. I looked at my reflection in the office window and tried to figure out why on earth I was sitting in the same corridor as him. Did the stubble on my chin make me look untrustworthy, or was it because the friend they saw me shaking hands with had dreadlocks? I respect the professional judgement of the police, but this time they had made a mistake, the same proverbial mistake people make when they judge a book by it’s cover.
I thought about what I wanted to do with my life as I was released from custody later that afternoon. Whatever it was, I decided that I wanted to do it thinking that the world was getting better. In order to create change, improvement, and a better future at any scale, I must first create the vision of that achievement.
