The Drought

The vast nothingness, the harsh, beating sun,
The silence of an Earth, breaking all around,
The soil, cracked, dead, all is over, all is done,
No movement, no life, no colour is found.
A slow movement on the ground, a shadow
Moves slowly across the vista, a cloud
Filled with life giving water, winds gust, blow.
Gaining speed, pure white, rising tall and proud.
Drop, another, a sudden torrent now falls.
Drought on hold, swept aside, dry earth revived.
First shoot, an animal seen, mating calls,
Profusion of colour, sound; some survived
The long barren night of the winter days,
Until the touch that, life does again raise!
