But there should be two each … I watched these two beautiful black-winged stilts (Himantopus himantopus) for a long time today at the Adelaide Zoo, trying to work out whether they choose to stand like this, on just one slender long leg, or whether they were actually missing a leg each. And then I saw this:

The tag on the remnant leg on the bird on the left would seem to indicate that these have both lost a leg, probably to fish(?). Their pose is involuntary…

UPDATE: On a subsequent visit, I saw them walking perfectly well on both legs! They apparaently tuck up one leg, and the elbow looks like a stub.

NIce capture Mate but sad about the legs.

  • At least they’re safe where they are … it’s funny, they’re in an enclosure right behind the ever-popular pandas, there are kids screaming and squealing, and these little chaps just mooch about, with no-one watching them (mostly).

Aren’t they the most beautiful birds :) Nicely captured Denzil. Looks like you are getting the hang of that 400mm :)

  • Thanks Lee – they are so elegant and delicate, aren’t they (and yes, I think I’m getting a BIT of a hang of it!!!)

Poor things…amazing they can still stand…and balance. Interesting shot.

  • Thanks so much JeniB, yes, they do look as though they’ll just keel over, but in fact they seem to manage quite wel…

What an amazing capture, definitely a Kodac moment :)

  • Thanks! I couldn’t really believe my eyes … until I saw the tag on the stump of the leg … poor things … but they seem happy enough, safe in their enclosure:)
