But there should be two each … I watched these two beautiful black-winged stilts (Himantopus himantopus) for a long time today at the Adelaide Zoo, trying to work out whether they choose to stand like this, on just one slender long leg, or whether they were actually missing a leg each. And then I saw this:
The tag on the remnant leg on the bird on the left would seem to indicate that these have both lost a leg, probably to fish(?). Their pose is involuntary…
UPDATE: On a subsequent visit, I saw them walking perfectly well on both legs! They apparaently tuck up one leg, and the elbow looks like a stub.
