This is the closest I can get to a red-nosed reindeer here in Australia in December! This is Kitten the possum having a munch on her apple tonight (December 16 2010).

Things have changed in the possum kingdom over the last couple of weeks. For months Tippy has been sleeping in the oak tree right outside the back door. After her baby DropKick was banished, Tippy lost her place to this possum, Kitten, who has been sleeping on and off in Tippy’s favourite oak tree roost. But then for the last couple of days, no-one has been sleeping in this spot, and in the daytime I can’t find anyone, in any tree, anywhere.

Also for the last few nights, everyone is skittish – even Mrs FatBum and her baby Fearless won’t come for food. I see them, but they stay in the tree. Kitten has returned to her usual haunt, out in the drive in the other oak tree, where she was brought up by her mother Mrs FatBum. Last night the big koala was bellowing in the nearby trees – perhaps that’s what has spooked everyone???

Canon EOS 400D, Sigma 18-200mm lens, at 200mm, 1/60th, ISO 400, f/6.3, flash (taken on full auto mode).

Taken at Balhannah, in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia.

I’m happier to see her than a reindeer:-) Sounds like something is a bit out of kilter….hope it resolves soon.

  • I reckon it might be the weather … they’re not used to getting drenched in the middle of December!!!

Heavens,Denzil, such pandemonium in possum county,i do hope the residents and intruder come to some workable arrangement and normality returns!

  • It’s still not settled unfortunately – last night I only saw one of the family … but I’m sure it’ll work out:)

Perhaps and cats or dogs have the Koala and possums spooked…. I’m sure they’ll be back while ever there is yummy fruit around though :)

  • No cats or other dogs around here – just Sammi, and while she would love to chase the possums, they know her and take normal evasive action! No, something else has upset them, and I only hope they’ll settle down soon!

Never mind meercat manor, I think you’ve created something greater here. And always gorgeous pictures of these characters.

  • Thank you for such a lovely comment! I’m so glad you like my ‘kids’:)
By the way, I’ve just discovered your blog, through the link on your piece on unemployment (which I’ll comment on directly soon). Your writing is outstanding – your work always catches my attention, then carries me to the sting at the end – no matter what the subject, no matter what the approach. It’s always a pleasure to read your work Chris … and more of that more directly, on your other site:)

LOL! Gorgeous shot, Denzil! There’s a very good chance you’ve got a python hanging around somewhere handy, if everything has gone to ground….hopefully it’ll move on soon…Happy Christmas to you too!

  • Thansk Mel! And thank God we don’t have pythons here!!! The brown snakes and the black snakes are enough for me frankly (I’m snake phobic to the point of total paralysis)! Even the thought of a python in my garden would have me ringing the estate agent on Monday!!! LOL
