Kitten, my adolescent (unmarried) mother possum and her baby. Kitten is only a year old, and although obviously possums can breed and produce at such a young age, apparently it is not usual. She’s quite nervous and is holding on to this baby for all it’s worth … For the last few nights I’ve caught glimpses of Kitten in the trees, with her new baby on her back, but she wouldn’t come anywhere near me. Tonight (Oct 17) is the first time she’s brought her baby to visit me. Bliss! Kitten is the one who wraps her tail around my finger while she’s eating, and who let me feel the little toes and claws of this baby when a foot was poking out of the pouch. I’m very privileged to be part of these animals’ lives… Balhannah, Adelaide Hills

I’m more of a possum grandmummy really (the curse of having a man’s name and not being one LOL) Tonight this little one chewed on a tiny piece of apple while her mother wolfed down big bits, and then wrapped her little tail around my finger – which is what her mother still does. It’s so lovely to have these little friends at my back dor:)
