Can you spot the new baby? Just below Tippy’s paws is the dark curl of the new baby’s tail, just peeking out of her pouch.
Tippy is one of my hand-tame possums who visit every night for food. I’ve been feeding her banana as well as apple because when I first saw her baby out of the pouch a couple of nights ago it looked a little under-nourished. Tippy herself is very small (and quite weird).
Balhannah, Adelaide Hills, August 2010
Straight out of the camera, Canon EOS400D, 1/60th, f5.6, ISO400, 172mm. Taken with flash on P setting, using torchlight for the camera to ‘see’ the subject.
Thank you – she is a peculiar little possum, who will come right up to me, even chase me across the ground, but I can’t touch her or even get a hand near her … although this night she let me stroke her little baby’s paw which had been out of the pouch as well as the tail…
I sit and imagine what a wonderful experience following these little critters must be. Thank you for sharing it with us here. They are incredible shots that really takes us to moments many of us would never know otherwise. What you do (photography speaking and animal kindness/love) is inspiring and amazing~ Peechez
Aaaaawwww – thanks!!! What a lovely comment, I’m really chuffed!
It is one of my life’s joys to go out each night (rain, hail, whatever), and share a moment or two with these delightful creatures! I’ve got two active babies at the moment, and this is a real high moment in the Chronicle of the Possum:)
Oh my gosh this makes me so nostalgic. When I was a kid, we had so many of these guys that used to come down and feed on our verandah, I used to hold the babies in my hand – they are so beautiful!
Fantastic shot! Congrats on the feature!
Thanks Damienne, I also have held the babies in my hand, and that is truly a very special moment. This baby, whose tail is just showing, was out last night and her mother, whom I cannot even lay a finger on, let me stroke the baby from tip to toe … it’s hard to express quite how extraordinary an experience this is – but YOU know, don’t you???!!!
