When I first posted this, here is what I wrote:
Lately the boy possum has been sleeping right in the narrow exit he uses to get out of the shed. You can see how narrow the gap is.
Today he was snoozing with his paws out through the gap as well, and in fact I thought perhaps he wasn’t very well, as he seemed especially lethargic, even given it was daylight and he was meant to be asleep. I thought I could see a bit of mucus in his nostrils, and wondered if perhaps he had a virus.
I’m pleased to report that tonight he was bouncing around and grabbing apple, so I hope he’s OK.
To update (January 2011), Mr Smooshy is no longer a frequent visitor, although just a couple of weeks ago he turned up and was happy to take apple from my hand, even though we hadn’t ‘spoken’ for months. His genetic imprint is clear, even I don’t see him in the flesh: the babies are all obviously his!
Another update (November 2011): Mr Smooshy made a surprise visit the other night, bellowing his territorial dominance from the gumtree. He happily climbed down and took some apple from my hand, as usual. He hasn’t forgotten me!
And yet another update (August 2012) I only see Mr Smooshy occasionally, but the girls all have babies each year, so he’s still around. Last night he was waiting on the feeding tray early in the night, and was really quite assertive about getting apple, trying to grab the dish from my hand. Once he was eating, he was happy to let me stroke him and hold his tail. Lovely boy!
Another year has passed (August 2013) I rarely see Mr Smooshy any more, but I do know he’s still around because those girls keep having babies, and they’re all the spitting image of him. The last time I saw him, he once again let me stroke him and feed him apple, and then he scampered off – he’s always ‘on guard’.
And yet another era has passed (July 2015) He’s still here!! Over the last few weeks I have interacted with Mr Smooshy several times. He’s not as thin as he was, he seems well, and the girl possums are still having babies that look exactly like him. I can’t believe that all this time later, Mr Smooshy is still hanging about, making babies, and giving me joy.
