Taken in Peterborough South Australia this shot shows the three railway gauges which once came to the town. You can see the narrow gauge at 3ft 6in, the standard gauge at 4ft 81/2in and the broad gauge at 5ft 6in. The colonies and then the states of Australia could not agree on a common rail gauge so there were three. Cargo was transferred from trains of one gauge unto trains of another gauge at Peterborough. All by hand using muscle power! The main trans Australia line now passes through the town on the standard gauge.
