Auricularia auricula-judae, also known as Jews Ear and Wood Ear.
Found growing on dead or dying Elder in a small woodland in South Yorkshire.
It feels like an ear when squeezed and I am told is delicious to eat. I preferred to leave it where it was and take its photo!

I’ve eaten and find very interesting! Fresh, it has a texture like crunchy rubber bands. :o)
I DO like it cut in fine strips and added to a salad with a Raspberry Vinegarette (did I spell that right?)….cooked, I like in a stir fry.
Considered one of the best of the wilds simply because it’s almost IMPOSSIBLE to mistake for anything else…and no known allergies (unless u’re allergic to fungi….poor soul)

  • Thanks Carla for the sound advice. perhaps I will pop back into the woods and gather some and/ or take some more photographs. – Dennis the Elder
