need some art advice/art opinions
i’m going to reach out to the rb community
this year i want to try to get in publications but i’m so green and innocent i don’t really know how to do that. i’ve been in a few pdf magazines before and that’s all super yay but i want to be on papers people.
so…i dont know…how does one go about doing that? is it easier if you’re represented by an agency or something? i guess, is anything easier if you have representation? i’d love to be in exhibitions but i know i cant do that from crackhead rock (where i live).
i guess i’m looking to make a next step and i dont know how to get there. what do you guys suggest?
even if you dont have a clue you can let me know what are some of your goals for this year.
oh and follow me on twitter poo!

Hi dendoo! It’s great that you are making a big move. I don’t know much about publications but here’s what I know a little :
1. If you want to go for agent, you have to consider paying the fees. It’s good idea though I thought about that last year but thinking that the money that you have to spend, think more. Try Hai if this is what you are looking for.
2. If you want to go for exhibition, search for galleries that open for submission. You can simply google or you knew any contemporary galleries and may propose your work.
I guess that’s all for now :)

are you a member of hai? i’ve seen it before but haven’t really looked into it but now that i want to make this move it might be a good option.

No I’m not. Not even anywhere.Try to look into the fees and see if they are affordable to you. Here’s another options illustration web and folioplanet

thanks! you’re giving me a lot to think about. i knew there would be fees involved in getting an agent but i didn’t know they would be as massive as you make them seem. i’m going to check everything out.
if anyone else has tips about this subject matter keep em coming!

I work both through agents and through sourcing my own work over many years and have found that relying on agents alone is not a wise move – you definitely have to get creative / active about doing it yourself, and bear in mind that a lot of the best agents won’t consider you until you have a bit of a track record.
If there are certain print magazines you are interested in, contact them directly. If you manage to inspire the art director or editor, you’re in. How you manage to inspire them is an art in itself. Editorial clients like to see the way you think – if you don’t have suitable work on a certain subject in your portfolio, take inspiration from a sample story / article and set yourself an assignment.
Getting the first few jobs is hard – you somehow need to prove that you are reliable and easy to work with, but you also don’t want to fall into the trap of working too cheaply or for free all of the time – it doesn’t do this overcrowded industry any favours in the long term.

Heya. I have super sub zero experience in professional (and non!) illustration, but here is someone who does: http://www.otoshimono.org/links00.html
Too lazy to link, sorry! She’s also on the bubble (maybe you already know all this) as innocent girl. Anyhoo her website has some cool links, including her agency i think, and I’ve seen her stuff in mags once or twice.
Good luck – you’re work is super unique so I’m sure you’ll stand out :)

how does one go about it? jump straight in, bandy yourself about…there is no formula or “right” way to go about these things…you just have to set your mind to it, and accept no other reality than that. work at it every day.

i don’t deny that but there are some things one can do and i was only seeking advice from some who have experience in those areas. i’ve been just doing it for this past year. i live on an island in the middle of the sea without any real design/illustration community. i’ve just been feeling in the dark and it’s really hard when you don’t have another artist physically there who has the same art interest as you or even cares that you want to do something besides making a brochure for tourists to come and buy up land that’s supposed to be for locals.
i’ll keep trying and i understand your advice. thanks.
