This is the male half of the mated Sandhill Cranes that frequent our pond out back. I was sitting on the bank taking pictures of his two young twins and he came up to check me out. There is no difference in the appearance of an adult male and female Sandhill, but I was present a couple of years ago when the female, slightly smaller than her mate, had just layed an egg. So, with this pair, at least, I know which is which.
Superb work as always, Delores! I love your candid shots and your knowledgeable descriptions. It’s heartwarming to read that birds like this are part of the family in a way, and that they seem quite comfortable in your presence. I wish I could meet you, Delores; you are such an interesting person!
