This image was taken when the Sandhill Crane chicks were 9 days old. They begin walking on the foraging hunts with the parents at about the 3rd or 4th day. For the first few days, the parent will forage for the food (worm, insect, or seed) and place it in the chick’s beak. At about the 8th or 9th day, the parent places the food on the ground in front of the chick to teach him to pick it up.
