The Veteran
Taken on November 11. One of the few. He is a member of the HMS Hood Association, Pride of the Royal Navy the Ship was sunk on 21 May 1941 during the first surface action between any unit of the Home Fleet and The German Battleship BISMARCK. The action lasted less than 10 minutes and resulted in the destruction of HMS Hood (it sank in under 2 minutes), of the crew of 1,418 only 3 men survived. This picture is not one of these as only one of the men survives today, he is one of the sailors that had previously served on HMS Hood before this last voyage.
The Naval Prayer
O eternal Lord God, who alone spreadest out of
the heavens, and rulest the raging of the sea;
who has compassed the waters with bounds
until day and night come to an end; be pleased
to receive into thy almighty and most gracious
protection the persons of us thy servants and
the fleet in which we serve. Preserve us from
the dangers of the sea, and from the violence of
the enemy; that we may be a safeguard unto our
most gracious sovereign lady, Queen Elizabeth
and her dominions, and security for such as
pass on the seas upon their lawful occasion; that
the inhabitants of our commonwealth may in
peace and quietness serve thee our God; and
that we may return in safety to enjoy the
blessings of the land, with the fruits of our
labours, and with a thankful remembrance of
thy mercies to praise and glorify thy holy name;
through Jesus Christ our lord.

This is an amazing photo, Andrew. I like that not only have you coloured selected the medals, but also the emblems on his jacket and tie. It’s such a strong portrait, with such a huge sentiment. It reminds me that these men, fought and died for us to have the lives that we lead today. For that I am truly grateful, and grateful to you for adding it to your portfolio. Thank you.

Very poignant. My Dad lost a friend on that ship and vowed to avenge him by joining the Royal Navy the very next day. He survived the war but always counted himself very lucky in doing so.

This is an amazing portrait…the history and this man’s journey is mind blowing….it’s so wonderful that we are acknowledging these men and what they went through…it needs to be shown …to give gratitude. He seems lonely a lonely soldier who lost a lot of his buddies in this horrific war, as he walks and reminds himself I feel his loss.
