Moist lips

She sits waiting for the sound
The sound that has become her start gun
She is unaware of how her body shakes
All she feels is the dryness in her mouth
She takes another drag of her cigarette
Ash falls from it and lands in her lap
Outside she hears the bell of the local school
She watches as happy children fold out
She smiles, not for what she sees
But for what she knows this time means
She walks into her tiny kitchen
Light shines in through the lace curtains
Pretty curtains that are stained
Stained with the stench of cigarettes and booze
Opening her cupboard she removes the first bottle
The clear liquid moves as her hand shakes
Instinctively she reaches up to the next shelf to grasp the cup
As she rests it beside the half full bottle
Her eyes are caught, as always by the words that cover it
Faded, scratched letters spell out ‘world’s greatest mum’
Her mind for a moment scrabbles to remember the day it was given
But the interest soon fades as she eyes the bottle again
Carelessly she throws her cigarette into the sink drain
Then twisting off the loose metal cap, she smells her friend and foe
Gripping the bottle she pours herself a drink
And as she places the bottle back down her dry mouth is finally moist.
