The Landmark of Graz overlooking the city from Schloßberg Hill is the Clocktower. The origins go back to the 13th century, since 1560 he is like you see it on the picture. Originally, he had only one hand to show the hours. Later, they added the minuteshand. They had to make it smaller to be different from the hour hand. Hence the big hand shows the hours, the small the minutes. The watch shows actually 05:15 pm, the time the image was taken.
During the Napoleon wars, Napoleon wanted to tear down the Fortress on Schloßberg Hill including this tower. The citzizens of Graz payed a high ransom to keep their old Clocktower, which was preserved then.
