Aurora Australis over the RSV Aurora Australisby Doug Thost
One of the main attractions of a late season voyage to Antarctica, is the opportunity to see auroras at night… something that you don’t get to see during summer, when there’s 24 hours daylight. So I was thrilled to get to see the most amazing auroras I’ve ever seen on my most recent trip. And I was on the icebreaker Aurora Australis as well. How good is that?
Having a Canon 5D mk.2 gave me the technical edge. I used a 15mm f2.8 lens at 2.8, ISO was 1250, exposure about 5 seconds. Tripod mounted, and even though the ship was moving at about 10 knots, it was very stable.
amazing, what are the two white disks Doug? spotlights and I presume by the blue curved line you meant the 15mm f/2.8 fisheye lens? Great shot very jealous of your travels… one day.
Thanks Travis… the disks are from the multi-million candle power spotlights, one each side of where I was taking the shot. On the large image you can just make out a large iceberg being illuminated by them…
