A near vertical aerial view of a lone Emperor Penguin on an ice floe, in the Antarctic pack ice.
I have been umming and erring about including this image… it isn’t great small, but once you see the penguin on the ice, casting her (his?) little shadow, it gives you a sense of vastness, loneliness, and isolation. We’d been sort-of stuck in the ice for 5 days, and were on a helicopter recce flight to find an open lead… I was kind of glad I was in a working helicopter, and not trapped on the shifting maze of ice below. Not that this penguin was trapped, or probably even worried about being by itself… funny how we project our feelings onto the animal world sometimes.
