Pilbara Petroglyphs
Rock engravings (petroglyphs) occur at countless sites over a wide area in the Pilbara region, with a variety of styles and subjects. The engraved motifs generally depict fauna, animal tracks and abstract symbols. Pilbara Petroglyphs are considered the earliest example of art in Australia. My field assistant and I stumbled upon these ones while mapping in an area near Wodgina Station.
We suddenly felt like very new arrivals in this ancient landscape…
