This is a compilation of two photographs plus a couple of texture layers. The figure is a life-size sculpture from the National Gallery of Victoria titled “The Connoisseur II” by Peter Corlett. The bathroom is mine. I have used the photo of the sculpture with the permission of the artist Peter Corlett.
I have always liked this art work and often wondered about the title – what was he evaluating as a ‘connoisseur’? I have no idea what the artist Peter Corlett intended when he conceived of this work but here’s my interpretation….. A connoisseur is an ‘expert judge in matters of taste’ and I think that this ‘connoisseur’ is viewing his image, as it progresses towards middle-age, with wistful contemplation, some puzzlement but with acceptance and without judgement.
