The Kan Tan leaves Geelong

The Kan Tan oil rig, which has been in Geelong for the past couple of months for repairs, left Geelong today. I went down to Point Lonsdale to watch it as it negotiated the treacherous waters of the rip. I wasn’t disappointed! Huge seas, which shook the pier where I was perched with my camera, added some drama to the day.
In some of the shots it is just possible to see tiny figures on the rig which gives some perspective to the enormous swell.

The weather was perfect for this kind of photography. It added some drama to what might have been a rather ho hum scene. But cold???!! It was OK when I arrived but then the wind changed and it was freezing. Those seas were a sight to behold. The waves would crash into the pier literally shaking it. I was chatting to a couple of fishermen there who said that the swell had actually died down since 7am!!!
