How Does It Feel?

How does it feel…
To have everybody fawn over your oceanic eyes,
Your sparkling snowy smile, your luminescent skin,
And your confident posture?

How does it feel
To know so much about art and literature and politics?
To unapologetically spout your opinion without fear
That someone will turn on you?
To be so sure that you know what you’re talking about?

How does it feel
To have anything you create turn instantly to gold?
A melody from your mouth, the finest tones of aural gossamer
A dance so fluid, looking a spirit rather than a body
Painting so lifelike, they breathe on the canvas
Words so perfect, off the tongue or on paper,
That the world laughs with them,
Cries with them,
bates its breath to hear more of them.

How does it feel
To be surrounded by people
who can’t get enough of your poise and charms,
Who all love you from near or far
with the same white-hot intensity.
to have more friends than you’ll ever need
more, in fact, than even you want

How does it feel
To have everything…

Well, because to have so much perfection, to have everything, would be the limit of what you could dream of, study about, and wish for. To long or want for nothing would be boring; no art, no passion could come from that kind of existence – which is why so many spoiled people are unhappy. Why rich people often live unfulfilled lives. It is in the searching, in the quest, for all the great things in life that we derive pleasure. For people who are very intelligent or talented, the pain would come in knowing that many people look down on you for just being YOU – for knowing too much, or for the admiration of others. Imagine being the best, say, ice-skater in the world. you KNOW there will be jealous people out there who will wish no good upon you simply based on that jealousy … and then, once they are so good at their craft, what is there left to improve upon? Half the fun is the learning, the discovery, the voyage. You learn SO much about yourself in that voyage. I wish every day that I was much better at studio art, but at the same time I know that if I woke up with flawless skills I would feel cheated. There would be a lack of experience and of hardship, a lack of that good soul work that can only come from really seeking a higher skill level. I would never want to be perfect. Perfect is so … ugh, BORING!

  • lol well put, darling. Thank you :) plus you’ve inspired me to write a poem from another angle. i originally figured i’d write a “things aren’t what they seem” kind of piece or an “it’s not easy being me” type for the parallel poem, but now i wonder if a boredom style would be better. :) thanks! …. now, since you had mentioned on facebook that this piece sounded like the speaker was hating on the subject, is there any advice you can give to make it sound more like the wistful jealousy i intended?

Well it feels ok ….thanks for asking. ;O)

Ohhh I have no idea but I reckon Lily is right on topic with her thoughts.
To be sooo defined seems boxed and packaged up rather too tightly me thinks.

  • glad to know! lol and yes, she is right. it’s sometimes hard to remember though. the reward is in the journey, not the destination itself. thanks for the favorite! you’re awesome!! :D

I think that, if you were to write a parallel, you would have to be very careful. You wrote this poem from a place of emotional honesty. Writing the “other side” wouldn’t be honest because you would have to really put yourself in the shoes of someone who is, in your mind, perfect. Now that’s hard to do considering no one really is, and those who think they are generally are full of it. And if you want to research it, wonderful – just make sure this poem is worth your time to do so. Sometimes we have fun ideas, but when they require a lot of soul-searching to make them honest, we realize the message doesn’t carry. As for wistful jealousy, I don’t know that it exists! Maybe envy? Wishes? Dreams? Think of a different way to describe what you call jealousy and I think you’ll find it’s easier. :) Sorry it took me so long to reply, btw!
  • it is possible to look up to someone and wish you could be like them, even as you feel pangs of jealousy… at least in my world. to be clear, i begrudge no one their happiness or achievements, but the occasional “why can’t i be like that” creeps up on me. and actually, the genuine side of being “perfect” can come from appreciating what one has paired also with, as you yourself said, realizing no one is perfect—hence the vulnerability of the prospective piece. i won’t know whether or not it will fly or flub until i try it. as always, your advice is deeply appreciated <3 and no worries at all! take your time. :) you got back to me; thanks!
