Stereotype

I am an American
Which means that I am fat
and lazy

I am a blonde
Which means I must be
stupid

I am a teenager
Which means that I care only
about myself

I am a man
Which means I am only
good for money

I am a senior citizen
Which means that I must be
senile

I am a woman
Which means I am to be prized
for beauty alone

I am fat
So obviously I’m worthless and
unattractive

I am gay
Which means that I’m immoral, and I want to be
the other gender

I am black
Which means I’m your friendly neighborhood
thug

I am poor
So you don’t have to
respect me, because it’s my own fault

I am a child
So that means it’s okay if I’m
ignored

I have a mental disability
Which means I must be
useless

I am physically challenged
Which means I can only be
mentally lacking

I am “the other”
Which means it must be okay for you
to judge me

I am a stereotype
One of “them,” so you don’t have to
know me

Artist's Description

I wanted to take many of the world’s common stereotypes and put it in a direct, sarcastic, ironic way that makes people think about their hang-ups and why they have them.

Women are often the subject of stereotypes, as depicted here in several stanzas
