Nowhen, Somewhen

When I mentioned all my idiosyncrasies, they told me I was mad and shook their heads.
You, smiled and told me yours.

When I was frustrated, annoyed, on edge – they walked away quickly, letting me cool off.
You, came forward and kissed me.

When I fumbled uncertainly, unable to express, they looked at me strangely and saw weakness.
You, took my hand and understood that some things are impossible to ‘say’.

When I was scared, lonely, depressed – they took me out for a laugh.
You, quietly held me and shared.

When I was confused and lost, they tried to explain.
You, pinched me and said “life can be confusing, my darling’

When I walked in, with dark glasses, hat and coat, they backed away in fear.
You, took them off, one by one, and said “There’s my man!”

When I gave my resolute face, the one of granite, they thought me cold and hard.
You, saw the pain and gave me time.

When I went away, shoulders hunched, not looking back, they turned and went their own way.
You, waited. And I did come back. I always do.

When I gave them my list of reasons, not to get involved, they studied them and decided.
You, threw them away, and said “No. Show me you”.

When I splayed my colours, shimmering and loud, they were impressed.
You, said “Let me see the White”
