Silence Lane
Silence Lane
I love cemeteries.
For some people, cemeteries are places of dread. For me, they are places of wonderful quiet and peace. A place of resting, whatever your religion, if any. Memories wrapped in stone and tree shadows. A place to reflect, and wonder about life. Perhaps our lives are just perfect – loved ones all around, financial independence; maybe fame and fortune.
In the end, we all wind up here.
One life, one chance to feel good about it.
My rules for photography and art are very simple – I like it, or I don’t…
Thanks for visiting my folio :)

mick8585, 10 months ago
man Im getting worried about you trawling these grave yards. Beautiful image here. Sharp as a pin. Did you do anything here? The sky looks like it has been dropped in later? Good use of ambient light ?
Mark German, 10 months ago
Everything original, including crop, Mick.
Only adjustments are exposure/contrast and straightened the black-looking cross.
Yes, I worry about me too ;)
Deri Dority, 10 months ago
Yep, this is going straight into my favorites too.
Susan Zohn, 10 months ago

LisaG, 10 months ago
I agree with Rhana, there are no words that could possibly explain the journey here…I’m moved deeply.
The setting not normally thought of as beauty, but beauty is what I find….looking here…
Stunning Capture Mark…

Mark German, 10 months ago
Thanks, all.
I happen to love this shot also, for the same reasons as many of you have mentioned. Hope that doesn’t sound vain – we are allowed to love our own shots sometimes, right?
Dear Marie – I will keep you wondering about that one. Some things are better when they are mysteries, no? ;)

I too love graveyards. I like the dramatic feeling of this, the contrast of the sky against the “gravescape” and the shadow of tree branches across the grave stones. Good work

Cemeteries are fascinating places!
and you have captured this one with skill and
an eye for beauty. I don’t think anything at all
about someone ‘haunting’ a graveyard for
good shots, plus some of the words on the
tombstones provide much fodder for novels.
Bruce Halliburton, 10 months ago
Subject matter a big favourite of mine. Perfect balance with pure blacks and whites yet so much detail preserved in the mid-tones. What format did you use?
Mark German, 10 months ago
Thanks all :)
Bruce – shot on digital :)
I was lucky with the lighting.

Wow, stunning…Love it!
Jewd, 9 months ago
Wow… so little adjustment, I really admire that, I get so over all the pieces that are 100 generations away from the original, not that it really matters to create that way, but it is refreshing to see a piece thats concieved and lives as it was born…this is just a truly magnificent composition, the tones, the light, love the tree framing the whole piece, a bit Tim Burton…where is this graveyard? I love them, especially the country ones…
Mark German, 9 months ago
Thanks, all :)
Jewd – looks like a mystical forgotten location – but is, in fact, in St Kilda :)

what great mood for a dreary scene.
great work man!
berndt2, 8 months ago
An amazing shot – the detail throughout is astounding. The lighting is so peaceful on the stones, even the shadows seems quite soft, but the bark of the tree looks so rough, solid and final.
SnapHappy, 8 months ago
perfect!

Wonderful shadows and tonal range. A beguiling and mysterious work indeed. Looks like a movie set from a 1940s spine-tingler – but with better definition!

Oliver Andrews, 5 months ago
Very Serene, was it taken in IR, it has that ‘otherworldly’ that IR gives out.
Mark German, 5 months ago
Thanks, Oliver – this is one of my favourite shots.
No – it is not IR – just longish exposure and processed to B&W.
Plukie, 5 months ago

I was fascinated with cemeteries when I was younger, so many stories and so much history in one place. I luv this pic, it’s reminiscent of the scenes from original 1930’s Dracula movies with Bela Lugosi.
