Artist's Description

Santa Margherita d’Antiochia, the church in Vernazza is built on a rock in front of the sea, and capped by an impressive belfry adorned by a pointed shape dome.

According to tradition, the church was built because a wooden box with the bones of Saint Margaret was found on the beach. The inhabitants who found the box, decided to build the church in the “Isolotto quarter” but a strong sea storm destroyed it and the relic got lost.

After a period of time, the box reappeared where it was originally found and the population took that as a sign and erected a new church there, where it stands to this day.
