Break Dance by Robert Case

I spent the better part of this morning watching pelicans circling, hovering, diving, climbing all over the sky while they searched for fish to eat. When they spot a group, a dance begins that ends in a crash dive into the blue Caribbean water where they make their catch.

The velocity they build up and the splash they make when they hit kept me saying, “man that’s gotta hurt,” but they showed no effects and they’d do it over and over and over again.

In this shot a Pelican hovers over a patch of calm water off Ambergris Caye in Belize Central America. As it flew, the pelican kept one eye on the fish and another on me, and that made its break dance all the more interesting and exciting to watch.

Shot with Nikon D-3 and the Nikkor ED AF 80-200 f-2.8 zoom lens with Schneider polarizing filter
