Xanthorroes Australis or the Australian Grass Tree.

This unique plant has large tufts of long wiry leaves and tall, black flower heads which look like spears. As it ages, it develops a stubby trunk which is made from the old leaf bases. The resin from the plant is used to make a high quality varnish.
