Help with choosing a new camera please. by Debbie Ironmonger

Posted on September 24, 2007

I’m looking to buy a new DSLR camera and would like advice on the best one to get please. I have a standard Nikon SLR which I’ve had for about 18 years now and I love it but a DSLR would be easier for me to print my own photos. I do mostly portraiture – used to make a pretty good living doing wedding/christening photos in the distant past – but I do enjoy landscapes and close up work. My budget is about £500 (UK). Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

I would go with an olympus or a cannon, I have both and love them both

Which lenses do you have dairygirl? Do the DSLR’s come with more than one lens? I’m being a pain in the butt, I know but this is a big outlay for me and I wanna get it right! :)

Debbie, If you have some good lenses, you may want to stick with Nikon. Many of the old lenses will work on the new cameras. You may have to manually focus with them. There are lots of sites out there that list what will work with various cameras. The most versitle camera is the D-80. It is more money, but will work with more lenses. I am going to get the D-40X. It will only work with the newest lenses (cpu auto focus) but it will do almost everything and is priced right. The Nikon kit lenses are better than Cannon. If you get a Cannon, you should just get the body and then a better quality lens (not cheap).
