Just found out that these ugly looking Southern Ground Hornbills are labelled ‘vulnerable’ on the endangered species list. They are the only ground dwellers of the hornbill family. Characteristic features of these slow big birds are their long eyelashes, large bills and short thick legs. They also sport a loose inflatable throat skin which inflates when calling. The call is a guttural horn sound.
Painted in watercolour on Arches 300gsm rough paper.
