Lonsdale House
Melbourne iconic Art Deco building, Lonsdale House, was designed as an innovative joining of two 19thC buildings by I G Anderson.
The makeover, complete with geometric tower and flagpole, was completed in 1934.
On a sad day for Melbourne in July 2009 this wonderful building has been approved for demolition by the Victorian State Government to make the abutting lane wider for easier access of delivery trucks.

Looks great David. So sad about Lonsdale House.
David Thompson replied
Thanks Chris. It is very sad but while Lonsdale House still stands there is hope, however slim.

Are you referring to the Victorian Government’s approval for the complete demolition of this building to make space for yet another shopping centre? There are a couple of websites that might interest people http://www.savelonsdalehouse.com
and a petition against its complete demolition here: http://www.gopetition.com.au/petitions/lonsdale-house.html
David Thompson replied
Yes. Minister Madden approved the demolition to widen Caledonian Lane to provide better access for delivery trucks and Lonsdale House will be replaced with a glass box shopping centre.
