Canary Wharf
Canary Wharf is a part of London that I’ve been meaning to visit for ages, but have always refrained due to various stories of photographers being hassled / frisked / manhandled by overzealous security personnel. It’s an area of London that I’ve visited a few times (mainly when I started web contracting back in 2007), and have always been fascinated by the “shininess” of the district – huge structures comprising of glass and steel, towering over the populace below.
Today I took the plunge, hopped on a train with my camera and trusty Sigma 10-20mm, and started brazenly snapping away. Well, if you’re going to do something, you might as well do it properly is what I always say!
This is by Canary Wharf station, and on the left is One Canada Place, sometimes known as Canary Wharf tower.

Absolutely stunning image Dan.
Did you get any bother then?
Dan Biggins replied
Cheers David – I didn’t thankfully. Took 10 minutes to pluck up the courage, realised how daft I was being and then whipped the camera out and started shooting. Went for a wander and then returned to get some more shots, and saw a security guard striding around purposefully and decided to leave it and go home…! Thanks for commenting.
LTPhotography
It was well worth you taking the plunge, great composition and image :-)
Dan Biggins replied
Thanks LTP – so much to shoot round Canary Wharf, just have to keep one eye open for the security guards!

Good job on going back to get this shot Dan. Love the perspective of this and the exposure and framing is brilliant. Fantastic light and I have always been a fan of that Swiss Railway clock (I have a watch like that).
A Definate favourite!
Dan Biggins replied
Thanks a lot Paul – some people find Canary Wharf sterile, but the clinical nature of the area appeals to me – it’s superficial but contains some wonderful architecture. Thanks for the fave, appreciated!

Great perspective and composed image! I’ve not been there yet. May be next time I visit London. :) Regards!
Dan Biggins replied
Thank you Edite! Be careful if you do visit – it’s technically private property so photography isn’t really allowed without a permit, but if you go on a Sunday it’s pretty quiet and security guards are few and far between. Glad you like it!
Paul Wilkin
Nice dramatic shot with good composition. I seem to be a magnet for security guards at stations and in shopping centres. There is no law to say you can’t photograph private property from a public place but I agree that security guards seem to be on high-alert and stop you if you are on private grounds. Unless of course you use a camera phone or a small point and shoot, which is what any terrorist would do.
Dan Biggins replied
Thanks Paul – yes, I’ve always found it strange that the authorities think that terrorists would bother to carry an SLR and a tripod around with them, whereas taking shots with a mobile phone or point and shoot would attract far less attention! Thanks for your comment.
billyboy
Beautifully composed… clean as a whistle, and your angles are so beautifully offset by that clock. Bet you waited hours to get the hands at just the right position. You’re so totally anal in your detail, and in shots like this it really pays off bigtime… there is not ONE element in this that doesn’t contribute to the whole.
It’s been such a pleasure browsing your pf.
Stunning work!!
Dan Biggins replied
Thanks Bill – to be honest, the hands on the clock were a happy accident. Was up against it with the constant threat of security wandering around, so fired off 10 or 12 shots – this was the one I liked the most. Thanks for the kind words, you’ve made my day!
