~~ Ruthie and her older sister “Titi” were playing at their grandmother’s house one day when they were little, before electricity came to that part of the Nevada desert, and the outlying homes and ranchos had no indoor toilets, either.
Well, their grandma ran a clean, tight “ship”, and she had just trapped and killed a couple of big rats, but had tossed them outdoors under the closest tree for the cats to dine on.
~~The girls had been dropped off early the same morning, and they had been very quiet and happy outside under the same tree. After a few hours, Gran began to (forgive me) ‘smell a rat’
- she had seen them playing with their dolls for too long without fighting! - they had tiny little pointy black leather noses, long whiskers, and little shell ears. . . and lovely soft brown fur all over their bodies.
~~So what could be wrong with that?? She decided the girls had to be personally check on, and when she got out right in front of her little sweethearts, she realized that their “dollies” didn’t have doll faces
~~You guessed it, the sisters had taken the clothes off their dolls to dress up the softly furred, cuddly, dead rats!
~~Gran made them wash and bathe and scrub. Every stitch they had on and the doll clothes got boiled in the wash tub outdoors, and to tell the truth, the girls were lucky not to be boiled along with the doll clothes! It was several years before this became a hysterically funny family story.
