THE OLD WOMAN’S SONG

Yes, I’m an old woman, and I’ve seen it all.
Now I can’t see: I could walk into a wall.

Yes, I’m an old woman, with scars and lines.
I’ve been hit and abused too many times.

Yes, I’m an old woman, I never could win.
So I took up a needle and sewed my own chin.

Yes, I’m an old woman, — I sewed up my chin.
There are burns on my face from my late husband’s sin.

Yes, I’m an old woman and God’s given me life.
It’s been many long years since I lived as a wife.

Yes, I’m an old woman but I no longer must hide.
And I still have my faith, my modesty, my pride.

Yes, I’m an old woman and I have a white head.
But sometimes I think I might better be dead.

Yes, dear, I’m an old woman and I can’t tell when
Allah will call me to die. But I’ll be at peace then.

09 Sep 2008- I now believe that the markings on this woman’s face are the result of tattooings, having seen another of Sgt. Klika’s photos of another person with the same pattern.

Great photo! She’s probably only 40 years old, but life in Iraq is so terrible and took it’s toll!

  • She might be. Life hasn’t been kind. But it looks to me that the white in her eyes could be cataracts in here eyes. Bright sunlight can make them come on, as can punctures to the eyes. But usually it’s age. Hubby’s already had them removed once on one eye and twice on the other. He’s only 54 now. . Hard to tell. Best let Russell know how you like his art. Thanks for doing so! =0)
