Forgotton Song
A Baying Wolf, is a sad and haunting sound you dont hear anymore, to me it seems as though they knew long ago it would come to this pass, hence their howling started. A rare sound indeed.
Wolves are an endangered species and have been hunted for centuries and nearly extinct, hopefull through careful conservation these beautiful beasts will be around forever and everyone can hear their special song. A pastel picture, I try to do art with heART. Dawn’s website

Forgotton Song
I watch her from a distance
There she sits, upon the hill
Silhouetted against the dying sun.
Whatever happened to their existence?
Whoever caused their blood to spill?
And now, what is done is done.
On the rise her head lifts
The breeze takes the howl adrift
As she cries, for the life of her pack.
The mournful sound of loss and grief
Is carried upon rustling leaves.
For what is done, is done
And there’s no going back.
For a moment, in the Golden haze
She sees me from where I stand
And from the depths of my heart I feel her pain.
With pride she holds my gaze.
Her Forgotten song goes unheard to some.
But I hear her all the same.
I close my eyes.
Her words are soft and wise.
One single tear adorns my cheek,
As she finds the words she wants to speak,
She tells me the story of the Forgotten Song.
With that, she appears before me
No longer is she upon the hill I see.
I reach down to touch her,
She is not real
But I feel the warmth and life in her fur.
She allowed me this moment of insight
Before she fled back to the night.
And suddenly,
Under my fingers was no longer the softness of her fur
But just the gentle spirit of her
And of the Forgotten Song.
For what is done, is done.
Many thanks to Laura for this beautifully written poem

There is talk of reintroducing them to Scotland, along with beavers… I’d like to see the bears back too… and hell, why not the big cats too!
dawndavies replied
We have a pack by Longleat too, it would be great if we can make room for all, but they have to be fenced in a huge part and wildlife for them to live on, as they have to eat and not attack anyone I suppose, thanks for liking this picture of mine Dawn
Crespuscular
Well wolves rarely attack humans in the wild… just like sharks there is a lot of myth surrounding them.
Possibly the main problem of re-introducing them is the habitat loss (deforestation) parts of Scotland would be good, but we really need to step up reforestation efforts… also hampered to a degree by overpopulation of deer with o natural predators (like wolves).
dawndavies
yes I agree, i feel that if they just fenced them in with their food, the trees undergroth everything would right itself, afterall we all need the trees for our air

beautiful image…and your words brought tears to my eyes. So very true….. I sometimes wonder what these people think is more important to leave to their children and grandchildren…... they money they make by raping and destroying the world, or a glorious, diverse and beautiful world for their children to explore…..
dawndavies replied
Thank you so much for liking this picture and i agree with your sentiments, it just amazes me that htese dangerous but fantastic creatures are not fenced in a huge area with their own food to catch, they cannot tell the difference to a farmers stock and wild food, but we need to keep all safe, human and animals

There was talk of re-introducing them to the Scottish Highlands. I hope they do, I want to hear that haunting howl. Great artwork!
dawndavies replied
thankyou so much, yes i do hope they do, however I hope that they are sensible about it and fence them in somehow and make sure enough food is provided for them, ten they wont stray as they are a dangerous animal, beautiful but dangerous, in america they let them breed as they were dying out, and did not provide fences or extra food for them, e farmers stock was taken and now they have taken them off the endangered list again until the numbers are so low they will have to go back on it, i worry that will harm their gene pool,i do love the sound of their howl and yes like you wuld like to hear them again, its as though they knew this would happen and hence thier howling started, well thats what i like to beleive, daft old bugger i am lol Dawn

Hauntingly beautiful, and i really like what you’ve written. I hear there are ideas to reintroduce wolves to Scotland along with bears and elk, but sadly i think the public have a warped view of the dangers of wolves and would oppose it strongly.
Your portfolio of work is really wonderful and i’ve enjoyed looking through it very much, cheers and look forward to seeing more :)
dawndavies replied
thank you so much and yes i do beleive that is correct about them trying to get them back into scotland, but i do hope its fenced off and still alow walker through if they are warned of coarse and enough wild food for them to eat, over in usa they nearly became extinct but the food got scarce and they got farmer stock, and now they are allowed to hunt them until the brink again, i think this is stupid, whos to say they dont need that full gene pool, and they have been taken off the endangered list sill, dawn so glad you like this though and look forward to our next little chat

Oh this one! :O) ♥
When I first saw it I thought – Man! I wish I was a Cub Scout leader again – Scouts use Wolves as their mascot in the Cub Scout section. It’s part of Kippling’s Tale – Mougli being brought up by a pack of wolves Raksha is his mum and Akela the pack leader. All the Cub Leaders take a name from the story [Not Mougli they’re the cubs] Shakaan Kah Baloo Bageera etc … The Cubs are called a pack and they sit in a council circle like wolves and they use the 2 hand salute on top of their heads to symbolise they are wolf cubs [ears] and follow the teachings of Mougli’s adventures pretty closely.
As to fencing wolves & wild life in etc what say we fence US in and leave the rest of the country to them? No wait, that would be too si-fi and somehow frugal style – can see the movies now …. I am Legend is the latest one to spring to mind lol
And your artwork …. Magnificent!
I can see the power of the wolf, the strength of it’s plight and yes hear the haunting sound of it’s cry. we should all take notice and start to realise we are PART of this world not Owners of it!
No wonder it was favourited again! :O) Sensational work all round girl! ♥
♥ !!! B R A V O !!!! ♥
dawndavies replied
aw thanks so much and i did not know that the cubs groups used it as a sybal, so thanks for telling me, and yes we need to look at the world differently, we are the grown ups, if we have dangerous creatures, then place them where all can be safe, still have the wild areas for people and creatures can wonder around but a few little guidlines to go with it, then all can prosper. we are taking and not giving back to this planet, but life here is a chain and we are breaking it, so sad, thrilled that you like this picture, its my fav, it the one picture which got me noticed on this site, and i cannot beleive how many comments it has had or its views, dawnxx

dawndavies replied
many thanks for liking this picture, yes they have thier own song and a sad call it is too, near us is a park called longleat and there have got a breeding pack there, i was unware of this some time ago and my car broke down at night, whilst i was wating for the breakdown guy i could hear this howling, never been so scared in my life as i was stranded on a dark loney road, heeh i was so white when the guy came he thught i was gonna pass out, when i told him he giggled and told me of the new wolves at the park lol dawnx
NatureGreeting...
Dawn, Breathtaking Art!!!! I am fortunate to still get to hear the lone call of the wolf, and the coyote too. I love to sit by my fire pit at night, and listen to their calls echo across the mountains, amplified by the clear cool crisp night air. I have been listing to them for years, but the packs are dwindling. I hope we will forever hear their song!!! Thanks Carolyn
dawndavies replied
wow many thanks carolyn, how wonderful for you, i have only heard this wonderful song once, i had broken down in my car and was awaiting the repair man, no other cars about at all and i heard this, nearly died of fright hehe until the repair man told me that the wildlife part i was near was just introduced them, a full breeding pack, lol i was as white as a sheet by the time this man came, dawn

I have a CD with their ‘music’, two fabulous china pieces with several wolves on them and a fabulous very large framed photo of two black wolves in amongst aspen trees. I call it my wolf area!!! I would love wolves to be introduced back into the Scottish wild – maybe they will naturally cull the deer , instead of all those shoots they have to do so!! Well done.
dawndavies replied
many thanks braedene for taking the time to read all on this picture, yes i do so hope that they do reintroduce them, surly this world is big enough for all its creatures, even if they are dangerous, they are there for a reason i am sure, i broke down once by longleat park and did not know they had got a full pack there hoping to breed them, god when i heard thier howels, well i nearly left a parcel, when the aa came he laughed and told me about this pack of wolves, hehe i was in a right state haha dawnx

Your artwork evokes the magic feeling of the wolf’s call. You might appreciate a quilt similar to your artwork, which a friend of mine made as a portrait of my Husky/Alsation cross dog (she barks like an Alsation, but also howls like a Husky). It is on my flickr photostream page:

Hmm … perhaps they are. There were plenty of wolves around when I was growing up and all, though; so, nowhere near extinction, were they, there.
I do love the sound, and I greatly admire the creature. If mankind acted half as well to their own family as wolves do, the world would be a far happier place!
dawndavies replied
over here they were all killed, nowadays we have a few breeding centres and their numbers are growing, their howl is extrordinary and i agree with you, they work as a family unit, dawnx

And what a stunning work of ART it is to, I did see a Documentry about Yellow stone Park, where they have re interduced them which is encouraging.

many thanks for liking this pastel picture, i missed this programme, i have heard they are thinking of doing this up in scotland somewhere and at Longleat park they have a breeding pack which is doing well, this picture was done as i broke down in my car and was awating the AA, boy i heard this howling and nearly had heart failure, i was in a right state when this poor AA man came, he laughed his head off when i told him, thats how i found out about the wolves being at longleat hehe haha dawnxx

Oh Wow Dawn your drawing is so magnificent it goes so well with your descriptive Poem and slightly sad, which brought a tear…....... Wonderful work you have such a great talent too! In 1996 I went to Florida I can’t remember where now but I think it was The Seminol we visited and we bought a beautiful figure head of a Wolf made in Resin and quite heavy too It stands in the china cabinet …........... on the back of the head is a carved Golden Eagle and for some reason I very often look at it and feel a closeness! Thank you so much for this. – its a def. fav. for me Dawn! – David

A lovely card. I really like the brushwork around the wolf. They re-introduced wolves in several of the lower states here in the US a little over 10 years ago. The reintroduction has been so successful that recently Idaho and Montana have opened hunting seasons on them. They have recently been moved from the endangered list to the threatened list. There are plans to let hunters kill about 43,000 of them. Go figure.
Hunting is a multi-billion dollar business, and the hunters say the wolves are killing too many deer and elk. Yet both deer and elk are more numerous than they have been in 100 years. The wolves are just bringing nature back into it’s natural balance.
dawndavies replied
yes i have heard that they have re introduced hunting, I know its a necessary evil but its seems such a waste, and yes its natures way of making what is left stonger, wish there was a better way, delighted that you like this pastel picture, dawnx

This is a wonderful artwork and I so concur with your sentiments! I think perhaps there are more around than the “experts” realize… we were camping up in Oregon one summer, and I swore I could hear the sounds of wolves. Well, the forest ranger said “No, absolutely not. Those were coyotes. There are no wolves in Oregon, anymore.” Yet after that, I lived down in Baja (Mexico) where coyotes were all around us, ALL the time – they even drank from my birdbath! I lived there nearly 10 years. And I still say— in Oregon, we heard WOLVES. Because the sound was not the same. And really, I hope I’m right! (I even liked the coyotes. Funny thing… we had 5 cats… they never got a one! In so many cases, our fear of animals is based on myth and paranoia, I suspect.) I do love this image! Awesome work
dawndavies replied 11 days ago
wow i hope you are right, i feel like you, some experts are not as expert as they like to think they are hehe I know these wolves can be a danger, but its not their fault, its how nature planned them to be, and there is enough room for all, this planet is just now ours is it, i am thrilled that you like this image, dawnx

If the book does well I really will be helping these fabulous creatures and helpoing with some conservation too. many thanks again, dawnxx
