Building my ultimate workflow - 3: The Workstation

Posted about 2 years ago

(Come in part way through? Check out the whole series )

As mentioned in the last piece, I have started with building a new workstation to support my work flow taking into account the issues that I have identified in ’The Mess".

Firstly let me say, ‘Hi, I’m Jon and I’m a PC’. I know Macs are synonymous with graphic work, but I am a PC person and working in IT, …

Building my ultimate workflow - 2: The mess

(Come in part way through? Check out the whole series )

So before we get into the process of building a new, efficient, work flow and cataloguing system I though it might be helpful to describe the mess in which I currently work, and highlight the issues I am looking to resolve.

The Hardware
I am working on a 4 year old laptop which is running a Pentium M 1.86Ghz processor and 1.5GB of RAM. The …

Help rebuild a life this Christmas!

Posted over 2 years ago

I wrote some time ago about a co-worker who is based in my companies Boston office who, in just his early 30s with no warning signs, suffered a major stroke. This has left him fighting to regain even the basic semblance of a normal life. He has gone through several major surgeries, and thankfully has taken steps along the long difficult road to recovery.

As a result of this, the Steven T Hill F

Building my ultimate workflow - 1: Introduction

Posted over 2 years ago

One of the greatest challenges I have faced once I transitioned into digital photography, is dealing with the issues of work flow. When I used film it was rather easy, I shot film, someone else did all the work, and I got back images. I catalogued them in albums and if I wanted bigger prints or more copes, I went back to the neg and, once again, it was someone else’s problem to make that …

Supporting a good cause

Posted over 2 years ago

Recently a co-worker from our US office suffered a stroke that has left him fighting just to get back to do the normal, everyday things that we take for granted every day.

To help out, any profit I make here form now until the end of October will be going towards helping him out. My boss and fellow RBer started this initiative over on his portfolio and you should check out his work as well.

A Christmas thought

Posted about 3 years ago

I recently travelled to the city of Boston in the US for work. I didn’t get any decent photos, but I did spend a day walking the Freedom Trail that takes you through the city and past most of the sights. Along the way I came across a holocaust memorial. It may seem to be an odd thing to bring up at Christmas, but the memorial had a number of quotes, and while technically horrible, this p…

So I've ticked over 5000 views

Posted about 3 years ago

but what have I learnt?

I’ve learnt it’s hard to get seen in a sea of art when you don’t even know what separates you from the crowd, let alone how to take advantage of it

I’ve learned I really don’t pick up my camera enough. Maybe time to invest in a second, leaner and lighter set-up.

I’ve learned I love portraiture. Trying to capture a person’s person…

Help picking a shot for gallery hanging

Posted over 3 years ago

It seems like just the blink of an eye but already my camera course has come to an end! It’s been a fun and educational 5 weeks and I’ve really enjoyed getting out and shooting more than usual. As part of the course, the gallery puts on a show using work from students across the various courses. So that means I have to pick a shot to submit, not an easy task!!

These I think are my…

Photograhy course and new inspiration

Posted over 3 years ago

I have seen a few discussions on Red Bubble and other photography forums I frequent about the merits of a doing formal photography training. Particularly for an ametur like myself who just like to make photo’s, there are definitely plenty of voices on both side of the argument.

A few weeks ago I signed up for one of the intermediate courses with the Australia Centre for Photography and so …
