Lightning bugs
kept spattering
against the
windshield.
He stared
at the
glowing
guts
until
they
faded away.

‘What happened to us?’
he asked,
plaintively.

I kept
my eyes
on the road,
my chest
tightening
around
my heart,
as if
to keep it
from
getting
away.

‘Its my fault’,
I said.
‘I ruined us’.

Another
lightning bug,
his silence
heavy
in the
air.

Then finally,
with his
face
held so
tenuously
together,

‘Its not your fault,
baby girl’.

I stick
my arm
out
into the
thick,
cerulean
air,
the gloaming
slipping
over
my fingers.

‘I love you
so much,
I said,
‘Its hard
to tell
whats real
sometimes,
like
nothing bad
could
ever
happen’.

He took
my hand
in his,
caressed it
with his
stubbly cheek,
kissed it,
squeezed it
briefly,
placed it
back
in
my lap.

‘Youll always
be my
best friend’,
he said.

Another
lightning bug
splattered
the windshield
and
tears
slid
quietly
down
my
face.
