The Australian Cattle Dog, also known as the Australian Heeler is every inch an Australian breed; he has been purebred since the 1890s. He was developed because imported herding dogs could not control the fairly wild cattle that needed to be driven from their outback grazing to market. He is also known as the Heeler because, like the Corgi, he drives cattle by nipping at their heels. It is known that a number of breeds including the Dalmatian, Bull Terrier, Kelpie and the Australian wild dog, the Dingo are all in his make up.

The Australian Cattle Dog was bred to protect the stockman and his property as well as the cattle and is naturally very protective, though biddable and amenable to training. Bred to work and protect he is not a natural housedog; he is a working dog with tremendous strength and endurance and needs to have his brain and desire to work harnessed

Medium in height at 17" – 20" and solidly built, the Australian Cattle Dog has a short coat with dense undercoat and is blue, blue mottled or blue speckled, with or without other markings or red speckle. Text Courtesy of Our Pets

Yours David? looks a great dog

  • Yes, he has great markings and is a wonderful guard dog now he is grown.

Unfortunately we had to ask our eldest son had to take him because my wife has such thin skin that any contact would leave he with quite severe wounds that use to take weeks to heal.

Many thanks for your comments Kelvin.
