An obelisk is a tall, thin, four-sided, tapering monument which ends in a pyramidal top. Ancient obelisks were made of a single piece of stone (a monolith).
This Obelisk stands between 19.5 and almost 22 meter in height according to various sources. Including the pedestal, which is 1.8 meters square, it stands at least 23 meters tall. Most estimates place its weight between 128 and 143 tons. The obelisk is made of red granite.

The very old Karnak Temple Complex — usually called simply Karnak — comprises a vast conglomeration of ruined temples, chapels, pylons and other buildings, notably the Great Temple of Amen and a massive structure begun by Pharaoh Amenhotep III (ca. 1391-1351 BC). It is located near Luxor, some 500 km south of Cairo, in Egypt. The area around Karnak was the ancient Egyptian Ipet-isut (“The Most Selected of Places”) and the main place of worship of the Theban Triad with the god Amun as its head. It is part of the monumental city of Thebes. The Karnak complex takes its name from the nearby (and partly surrounded) modern village of el-Karnak, some 2.5 km north of Luxor. Yes what a great Pov, you did well with the lighting

  • In 1977 we lived and worked in Iran so we were true “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” and quite often went out in the midday sun. LOL

I was able to find a vantage point so that the sun was just behind the tip of this magnificent column. Gave me a little lens flair but in my opinion it was worth it

    Thanks for your comments Kelvin.

WOW! its almost like the one on 2001 great job capturing the sun at the top awesome work!

  • Taken in 1977 a long before the film but I see exactly what you mean.

The column was hieroglyphics from bottom to top, a fantastic piece of workmanship on such a monumental slab of stone. But then almost everything filled us with awe because of its scale and superb craftsmanship.

    Thank you for your comments.
