The quality of work and a few other things !!!!
Dear Bubblers,
To all my friends here this is disturbing me!
Too many of us are up loading work thats really not up to the standards of RB I am sorry to say.
I have noticed that over the last few months people have been uploading fotos of all types of things that really have nothing to do with the Art community at all!
And I find that this takes the pleasure of even coming on and taking time to comment based on the quality of the work.
I don’t like saying this but we really need to start loading our best work as RedBubble says when we are up loading!
Doing so also keeps the quality of RB at its highest and also allows us to be in a community of people who care about art and not just a social on line chat room!
I don’t find it necessary to point out people that are at fault here because you know who you are but it seems to me that RB’s quality will be on the down turn if this continues!
Or I simply need to drop everyone off my watch list and start over.
I thought it was a art community with people that care about the quality of their work and thats why I joined I could of gone anywhere to simply post and say ok my work is up.
But I take pride in my work and show only work I think is worthy of showing and wanted to be in a place where others did the same.
I stopped uploading as I saw more and more people not caring what they posted and when I noticed that it became a “more is better” mentality than “quality is best” attitude!
just post when you have a great painting or photograph or any type of art worth showing not your hobby fotos for the school prom or your pet sitting at a table with a clown hat on.
Some of us out there are posting so much inferior work in bunches to be seen that its a job just opening up their site even though I like the person posting!
It seems to me that some of us out there are simply interested in being seen on line than the quality of their work!
And this attitude in time will kill the quality of the RedBubble site they belong to.
Also one last thing there is also too much in house bickering among some of us and you know who you are too and this also kills the love we should be sharing for one another’s art !
This is an art community an like all community’s there are always gonna be a few bad eggs in the bunch but isn’t it better when we are creating support than looking for a reason to create unrest. Chasing after romances and telling lies about one another simply to create ill fillings towards someone you don’t like or are jealous of their work is childish!
We should be supporting and not tearing down one another based on pettiness !
This is disturbing and the longer I stay here the more the story’s about these people come up and the more sad I become because this really isn’t needed here.
Please if you really love it here you will all put a stop to this and help support a place you love instead of creating a place full of unrest and hate!
We know who these people are lets just turn our backs to this stupidity an the ones creating it an say this is my home my Bubble and I want it to be the best site on line.
Anyone see what I am talking about or is it just me?
IngerMargrete
I understand and also agree:) Only your best work should be uploaded like RB says.
Deborah H. Ben...
I see some of what you are talking about. But I stay to myself for the most part so maybe I don`t see as much as you. I sense alot of game playing and I don`t play games.
David Roman replied
Game playing has become a big problem of late and seems to be created by a few with nothing else better to do than try to get attention drawn to themselves. Sadly no one steps forward to say your type of energy we don’t need here!
Thanks for your comments.
mikrin
Totally agree David! Thanks for bringing this out in the open!!! :)
David Roman replied
Hey M its getting to be a job coming on and the funs gone for now an thats making me sad and I think the bubble needs to clean house. Make a pro section and a hobby place for the hobbyist. But thanks for your support.
Ann Morgan
I belonged to a site where people were writing about their child’s first mouth of solid food etc. and I am thinking that there probably is a site for that type of conversation and a site for just about anything. This s an Art Web site and I think most people here on rb see that however I have seen some of what you are talking about and I hope they become aware. This becomes a touchy subject and some people will say “just drop them from your watchlist”. Good luck with this one David, you know I will support you because I think you’re swell!!!
Anne Staub
I’ve just removed several images in my portfolio, good to go through and review work regularly. There is nothing wrong with also reviewing your own watchlist and favorites. This is also on my to do list :)
David Roman replied
I build other sites to keep my work in sites and not too much in my main site I will down size that to about 20 photos each page so it reflects what I like and then direct people to the larger site.
I don’t like to drop people that have been supportive of my work and me so I keep all the people who have been there since I first came here !
I love em all !
But we do need to be more careful about what we post here an some of us are getting lazy! At an alarming rate.
I will support all the people who post but it gets more and more difficult to do so when its 10 fotos of the same thing but just a little different!
Gee how many shots of the sun setting do we need when they all start to look the same or of a cat or a dog or a teddy bear? Hello ???
Anyway maybe you understand me?
Anyway thanks for your time anne.
Sharon Johnstone
I wasn’t aware of any malicious behavour…..it makes me very sad to think that there has been.
I looked at a lot of other sites before I joined Red Bubble. I chose to use Red Bubble because it was a community of artists supporting each other. Getting feedback on my work has given me the confidence to go further with my work and actually exhibit it. I don’t think without the support I have had from other artists here that I would have had the confidence to do this.
David Roman replied
Hey I have really been happy on this site and have grown so much but these issues do exist or others wouldn’t be here saying thank you for bringing them up! And I think the support we give and get helps to make us better artist and give us more security as people to do what we do.
But some things need to be addressed so I did.
But this isn’t about you.
Daniel Rayfield
I agree however go easy we all have to start somewhere
David Roman replied
Oh I always support my friends here regardless if its the top of the line or a beginner but I am saying to them hey look at how many times your posting the same thing and Please look at the quality of it!
Your names on the item your posting!
See what I am saying not don’t post be be smart about it! We don’t need 10 no matter how much you want to share it with us!
Tamme Marshall
Amen David!! You said it all and so well! : ) (hope I’m not one of the offenders) ; P You can always feel free to just say – “Hey, T, this is CRAP!!!! Get rid of it!” I trust your opinion.
David Roman replied
Hey my opinion my not be too good on what your trying to say in your art all I wanna say is becareful about what you post!
An stop the in house cat fighting and ugly games!
An I know you know what I am talking about!
See ya my friend and thanks for coming !
Daniel Rayfield
Like I said I do Agree
David Roman replied
Thank you for your understanding and honesty to this subject!

Well I must say… I just opened up to a person who put up 10 pieces.. this disterbs me.. but I never talk about it.. perhaps David what is best to you is not so to someone else so I try to see a person who is trying to do …when I see all the work .. their best ok.. I am no judge in their world.. I can not stand it when people upload tons of work!! I never upload ..on special occasion i have and apologize profusely for it… more than 3 works per day… and not all at once.. There was a really good photographer on here.. still may be .. real good.. but 15 to 20 shots!!! omg.. so I cannot say what is good to some is good to me.. I do not comment or if I don’t consistently feel anything towards the work I take them off my watchlist.. but I would deeply appreciate a limit on uploads.. I cannot even enjoy the work of all the wonderful Co Creators here if my watchlist is full of one persons work!! It drives me bonkers!!! anyway.. I do not know it this was discussed..but it felt good to say it.. I have held it in for about a year!! tee hee.. David.. thanks
David Roman replied
We feel the same I don’t comment on work thats so crazy! But even if its not my style and an attempt I comment and give support but too many peices a day and all the same thing gee how much is a fan suppose to support or for that matter take!LOL
Hopefully this Journal will open a few eyes and maybe they will say hey thats too many to up load of the same thing! I hope so:
Thanks my friend
Agnes McGuinness
In order to ease my withdrawel symptoms (HA HA HA) I thought I’d come on to RB for a while and tidy my profile, maybe get rid of some stuff. So I thought it a coincidence to see this post. I agree, and with respect to myself as well I might add. We should weed our stuff every so often. The social side of RB is enjoyable too. But it is primarily an art site. It is a joy to see the work of so many great artists, and to hope that mine is acceptable. To sell, of course is great, too. As for infighting and games, I tend to ignore it, but it is bad for the site and the reputation of RB. I have lovely people on my watchlist, so we don’t have any of that.
Bravo, David, for having the courage to say what needs to be said. Makes me brave enough to ask, How many cats is a person expected to look at? Back to weeding for me
David Roman replied
Exactly my friend how many cats and sunsets an rocks with water falling in slow motion and gee the list can go on and on I love that stuff too but not 10 or 7 or 6 of the same thing and then get upset when I don’t make a nice long comment!
Gee what do I need to say hey you stop loading in the same stuff over and over again!! The world has a lot of different stuff to photograph!LOL
Anyway some might get angry but in school little Suzie or Bobby were told to be creative !Well remember that here too! But some will never get this and thats ok but not 10 shots of the same darn thing!
ajax
I’m a bit perturbed about this did’nt realize there was any in house fighting :<((
I post images I like and I go through my stuff regular and delete lots that I’m not happy with any-more.Probably why I don’t seem to have many views for the length of time I’ve been on RB.I am guilty of doing a series of Red belly Black Snakes, but I liked all of them:<))
David Roman replied
Your ok Ajax so don’t worry anything under 3 is cool !
And your always creative and your lucky you haven’t ben in the middle of high school bickering. And I love your work too!
See ya and thanks for you comment!
Kasey Cline
Hey Mr D!!!! I could not agree with you more and its about damn time someone stood up and said so!
Art – I know that some of my stuff is not perfect and I like Ajax am constantly deleted works. (Which I need to do again) I have also found that stuff that I think is amazing no one really likes. Such is life! But we all should only be posting the work that we most proud of and we all should be commenting like photographers as well! Just my two sense!
Bickering – I have had my fair share of drama placed in my lap and I sometimes want to say this isn’t High School people. How can we say we are an a family and then cause drama for someone else!!!! I don’t get it!!!
Kudos to you my friend for posting this! I agree 100%
David Roman replied
Thank you my friend and we ned to stick together and say hey lets keep the quality of this place high and the trouble makes at a minimum.
See ya and thanks a lot!
Judi Taylor
Your point is valid … And my time is on here is short so I appreciate your point. I have to agree with you and if I ever become one of “those”, please gently call me on it privately. I confess I was one of those awhile back but I have learned. Hopefully I will continue to learn and only post quality work. Every now and then one may slip through and I have removed it myself! So keep me honest and keep me challenged … it is the best of all worlds! Thank you David for the courage and honesty and sincerity you showed here.

WOW THIS IS GOOOOD!!!!! Yes that was sincere.

Hmm.. well, a lady I admire the art of quite considerably, just posted pictures of her children and grandchildren. They were not fabulous paintings, but they were interesting to look at, and I must say she did an incredible job in their creation.
She was citing them as reason, and inspiration, for her work. She wasn’t displaying them as her work. And, I felt perfectly free to either ignore the notice that she had uploaded them, or go and see them. I went to see them.
So, basically, what I’m saying is this: reason for the uploads, how they are done, how often, etc. comes into play. I do agree with you, in most cases, but, some people are uploading to the stock groups, some people are showing off their talents as costume makers, some are sharing their inspiration, and some are showing off photographs they took which they find to be well balanced and artwork all on their own.
Perhaps the emphasis should be more on people deciding what belongs under ‘artwork’ and what should be uploaded and hidden, or to some place like Image Shack, and shared in a journal, instead.
For the record, the pictures of my family which I uploaded are art, or they are for the stock group. Whether you think they are good art, or my best art, is only your interpretation. Maybe that’s the best I can do with photography! However, i did get compliments on some of them from photographers I admire, so …
David Roman replied
I am not talking about your family fotos I don’t think I saw them an a woman posted hers last night of her daughter getting her Phd in law I thought that was wonderful to share shes loved here by all and I commented on them shes a wondeful artist here on RB so it was very nice for her to share them!
My problem is the people who continue to up load fotos of things that really have no art value at all and who send repeated images of the same image but maybe from a different angle too many times ! Gee how many times do you expect a person to look at the same image and have a comment an then when you don’t comment they wonder whats wrong?
Come on lets use common sense here.
An art is a very private an thats not my job to say hey thats not art. An thats not where I am coming from.
There’s flicker and other sites devoted to family fotos and things from your wedding and high school reunion for sharing but I really thought this was a on line art community.
ajax
I know what you mean,I have removed people from list because when you get on after a couple of days there is a massive overload.Some-times a whole page of one person. You don’t have the hours to comment, you use all your time and don’t get to put your stuff up.I comment on my favs then later I’ll go through my watchlist and see what they’re up to.A few on my list go away for work etc,so they have lots of images but that’s cool, as their work is worth the wait….David don’t comment on my work if you have’nt the time I will not be offended. This site is mainly about selling your work ,not that I’ve sold much (that’s also ok I’m not interested in money).....Knickers to the high school club, that was my motto in school as well…....Good on you for saying what you feel…(hey that’s dumb…you do it all the time with your work)
David Roman replied
Thank you Ajax glad you understand!
Janis Zroback
I agree in principle with some of the points raised here…I try to restrict my uploads to one per day unless I won’t be around the next day, and then there will be two…but I post only what I consider to be my best work…
I try to comment as much as I can on the work of all the people on my watch list, and to thank all those who comment on my own work, but it can sometimes be diffficult and time consuming, if one person has posted five or more on the same day….so my comments have to be very brief, when in fact I would like to be a little more fulsome in praise of something I find is really good.
There have been many discussions about this very same topic over the last few months, with no real solution…we’re dealing with hosts of different people who have very different and very valid opinions about what RB means to them…. so for what its worth, the only suggestion I can make is that in order to lower frustration levels, either to limit the numbers on watchlists, or to comment only on specifically chosen images….
David Roman replied
I post to all and then when its so bad I still give them a pat on the back and hope it gets better next time and it usually does.
What I mean is the repeater someone who post 6,7, 8 of tje same foto or pet foto or family foto or some stupid thing thats 100% not art!
This is an Art community is it not? So why post family fotos when your on a art community post that on Flicker and direct your fans to that site with a journal or a link!
Thats easy to do.
thanks for coming !
Angi Baker
I love it here at RB (Redbubble) and I agree to somewhat David, however everyone has to start somewhere and some folks may be proud of there work that others may find that isn’t very pleasing to the eye, BE NICE DEAR! We all have had to start somewhere, I can remember when I first started my work wasn’t up to par as some of the others, but in due time I think I have become alot better, (I think) however some others may not seem to think so, it’s all to each his own…
David Roman replied
Well I think we need to keep this place as a place for artist!
And I do realize that this place for a lot of us is a growing place but if you come here with no intention of doing art an use it because it offers cool web sites for free and a place to chat with people then go some where else!
If its used to upload fotos of the family then go to Flicker and if its a place where you come to just upload silly things then thats your business I wont look at it:
But if your good and have respect for your work then keep the level of it high and don’t upload just to be on line it lowers your quality of work and lowers the level of this wonderful Place!
See what I mean?
An I support all the new commers and the less talented because we all have started somewhere!
An thats not what I am talking about!
See ya my friend
Mindy McGregor
Hi David!
I do agree with you , I for one have been guilty of this from time to time, I have went through my gallery and deleted several of my images, I have found that over time some of the things that I considered to be my best work, I look at now and dont like as much. But I think all the feedback on the not so good images has inspired me and helped me grow as an artist, I think that it is part of this endless journey!
David Roman replied
I agree with you not every inage posted is a lost cause I wanna have people say hey Dave maybe this would of been better and thats cool !
I am not talking about that your a great artist and we see that what I am talking about is being careful to post when you know you have a winner! And maybe when you think you want a comment on if you are going in the right direction but not just posting to have a photo on line thats silly and lowers the standard of why we all came here and that was to be in a community of artist that care about their high quality of art they are showing the public.
So you keep on doing what you do its lovely! And thanks for coming Mindy
joan warburton
I have to disagree, David. With all due respect and I say this with a smile, the artist might believe that every one of the uploaded photos is very special and each one is a work of art. There could be several other reasons for a large upload.
One would be that the person just opened their site but that doesn’t sound like the case.
Another reason could be that a large number of uploads are showing up on your “bubble” page because the artist uploaded and then changed his/her mind. Have you visited the artist’s site and are all of these photos present? Perfect example of this is your journal entry right here. It shows up on my bubble page twice. You probably started this journal and then took it down instead of reworking the original entry or you accidentally posted this twice and took one down.
And finally it’s possible the artist is waiting for feedback from the site, from family and relatives, to let him/her know which ones he/she should keep up. If you can’t decide, let friends, family and the public decide. That seems to go on quite a bit. Is it wrong? I don’t think so.
We’re all up here, like you said, to showcase our best and maybe we can’t decide immediately or maybe, like I said before, the images went up and some were taken down.
Whatever the case I’m uncomfortable with anyone deciding what is art and what is not art, what’s your best and what’s your worst. That’s for the artist to decide and that’s why there is art up here that we love and we hate…..as it should be. :)
David Roman replied
No body says a thing about what art is JoanW what I say is do we need to see 10 fotos of the pet or the moon and then 10 shots of a silly photo thats of a person and is not related to art but to the fact that the person wanted to just show a image and post!
The quality gos down !
I got parrots I love them but do I post fotos of my parrots ? No and if I did I would hope someone says to me hey David what in the world do your parrots have to do with RB and art?
Humm and I would say well I love my parrots and so they are art to me!
And what are you gonna say Oh thats cool to you its art so thats ok!?
Gee we gotta be more defined about what we say is art!
Simple as that as for people who are beginners and trying to decide anyone knows thats a beginner but not someone whos been here for a long time and run out of images to post of quality and decided to just post anything to be remembered an will post the most ugly foto just to be on line! Gee thats not what I would think a person who cares about their work would do and we have people here who have been here a long time posting 6,7, 8, 9 , 10 different photos of the same thing!Only from a different angle of 2 inches larger or smaller of the same shot!
As for my post I hit the button because the thing didn’t move and then I saw it was posted twice and removed it when I did!
I don’t post to post! I want my name and level of work to stand out and not have people come to my site and say oh whats that garbage I thought he had nice stuff.
Well he does but its mixed in with so much garbage that no one wants to spend time looking at it!
And if we start to build RB up to a place that people come to and say oh theres a lot of junk inbetween some good stuff but most of its junk hell they will stop coming to see great work!
I hope you get this its not people like you its the ones that don’t want to be artist but who want to just be seen on a site that offers great web sites for free!
I bet if you had to pay for these site more than half the people who have no interest in showing other than showing family fotos and dog or cat shot will split and the people who care about their art will pay and stay!
I hope this helps clear up any misunderstanding over what I mean!
Thanks Joan !

Hi David
What a msg, I do agree with some of what you are saying and at times I do get frustrated with some Images as you say when you load 5,6 7, 8, 9, pictures looking the same.
I still do not understand why people would want to load up lots of family shot as we hope to sell here! So I would think that some of the other sites would be better for this type of work. (Fliker)
We need to re focus on what the site is about and them maybe we will get a lot more credit for our work.
I do not even think that I am good at what I do but I take time and think about the ones I put up. I did take some down, as I did not think they would work. I have 100s of shots.
We need to strike a balance on what we put up and also encourage new people so we do need a bit of flexibility so they get to show and then give advice on how to improve.
There is room for all and I think the host of the Groups could manage and maybe help with the standard of work. They work hard and do get lots of work that does not fit the guidelines.
We all need to work on this together
Keep up the great work
Nala ☺
David Roman replied
Hey Alan I think your right about going to Flicker with the family fotos and the things that have nothing to do with art and we need someone to say to the new people thats not art when ( they wanna load up school fotos and other non art things)an say to them we’re an art community maybe you go to Flicker and stick to that!
Then we can keep the level of RB high!
Cornelia Togea
I’ve started going through my images and deleting some that I’m not quite happy about, or that have received very little or no feedback.
I would also be happy to receive more criticism and advice about how I could improve my images, not just pets on my back, although I love those too :)
But I understand that everyone here doesnt necessarily have the same “level” and all works may not be artistic or creative or good enough. I have a hard time deciding what that is when it comes to my own images…
But thanks for taking this up, it’s very important, so I agree with your main points.
Cheers.
Cornelia
David Roman replied
Hey Cornelia,
we all want to grow and have comments on our work I like it too. But we ned to be honest am i posting an image that I am proud of or just posting to get attention to my work!
I wont look at your work if you post all the time and its not of a level worthy of consideration for me.
If you have posted work thatw wonderful and you can see your time was spent on the total photo or image then I will look but when you put other things in your post thats at the lowest quality and mkes me wonder did you really post the super stuff I just saw then I dont come back again!
I think your work should grow and if you can’t post stuff thats showing your growth then don’t post until you have a image thats worthy of your other work!
See my point?
You can be the judge but be honest does this mesure up to my best!
Me I dont want to post stuff thats not better than the last of my work I get embarrassed that people look at me and say hey whats that hes doing thats ugly.
But thats how I feel about my work I wanna have people look at it and say now thats cool!
Anyway thanks for coming thats really great!

Oh…. don’t stop watching me… I’d miss that.
I agree with you David. The higher the standard of artwork on RB the more return visitors to site we’ll get. We are making the site.. and it’s the quality of products we’re offering to potential buyers that makes someone stay a little longer and browse or go to another site right away.
On the other hand, as some others already pointed out, everyone is here for a different reason. Some want some feedback (go to Flicker), some want to show their family the wedding photos (go to Yahoo photos or Photobox) and some others just want to get that bit of encouragement and feedback. So I tend to let them all have theirs and just not comment.
Though the people I’m watching are serious about their product but you do find the odd image here and their… and I know how easy it is to think “oh, I’ll put that on RB and see what others think about it”. It’s always a gamble… you might think it’s the best you’ve done so far but others might not see it that way. Plus everyone’s got a different taste. I’m personally not a big fan of cats or cars, but again, that all depends on the quality of the image.
I tend to stick to a few rules and that seems to work for me:
1. Never upload an image you just shot. wait a day, revisit it and if you think it’s really good upload it. Of course this is subjective but you will gain some distance and the feeling you’ve had when taking it and the first excitement about your “success” will have faded a little.
2. Look at the image and imagine it as a big print on a wall in an exclusive gallery… You’re about to open the doors to this evenings visitors. Now look at your image again (big on the wall) and decide whether you would be happy to stand next to it and say proudly “This is mine.” or whether you’d go and hide.
The moral of the story is, as said before be others, only upload your very very best.
This was supposed a brief comment, now look what’s happened.
David Roman replied
I agree with you my friend thats what I think too but this is advertised as a Art community ! Hummm I think we all know what that means! And as you said the better the quality of work the better we all look in the end like real talented artist!
An I want my work to be taken as wonderful work and not sitting in a place where every thing for cats dogs and possums are the topic of the day.Unless they are shot in a nature setting with some style like some of my fans do.
I think we agree on the same thing think first before up loading an if you have no idea whats nice then look around the place at the better sites an get an idea whats correct.
Its a learning place an a teaching place so this is just a starting point on saying hey some of you guys are messing up a good thing and its not correct!
Anne-Marie Lad...
David, you said it all! I also agree with what you say – didn’t know about the in-house dissent, which is sad to hear. I am a ‘beginner’ and try to only upload what I am proud of, but DO get carried away sometimes!!! Then I go and delete a whole lot!! Thank God for the new Bulk edit feature!
In fact, as I am getting better at my work, I find myself removing more and more work from my portfolio, as I was about to do this morning! i will be ruthless, I promise!!! LOL!
David, I hope you will continue to comment on my work when you feel like it and say it like it is! Very few people actually tell you what is good about the photo/painting/writing… I would like to hear more about the composition, lighting, dof, contrast etc. To me, that is critique and is helpful to a newbie like me and helps me learn what o do and not to do!
Thank you for bringing this out in the open – it needed to be said, and I am probably also one of those guilty of uploading too much at times! I will attend to that right now!! :o)
David Roman replied
Thanks Anne we all go crazy in the beginning thats normal and fun to see your work on line I did it too. But at some point some of us up load stuff that even their mommas wouldn’t want to see! But your insight is open honest and we need people like you who say hey I did it too and maybe I was wrong! But at least you see it!
This is for the ones that need a little eye opener to what they are destroying here with poor work and repeated images! And I will offer help when I see its needed and welcomed. Thanks a lot for your comments
Anne-Marie Lad...
I see the ‘Bulk Edit’ feature does NOT allow you to delete work… perhaps it might be useful to add ‘delete’ to the ‘edit’ and ‘show public view’ under each of the uploaded images. this would allow us to remove our work simply and quickly instead of having to open each image and then deleting.
Just a thought. :)
Anne-Marie Lad...
I just went through my gallery and removed 3 pages! And gee it felt good! I was almost cringing when I looked at some of the stuff I had up… slinks away!
Now to the watchlist and faves…
Thank you David, for opening my eyes to be more aware and conscious of what I upload and share on RB!! :)
Ann Morgan
I hope you had a delicious dinner!!!!! This is a very important hot topic.

Well i hope we can all learn and i think maybe some will and have .. i still think twice about what i put up
Take care and hope it continues to roll

I know what you are saying David, but some folks are proud of what they do; hell we can’t please them all; not even you are I my friend… Cool off dear!
David Roman replied
I am not mad! Really not mad just concerned about the quality of the work being shown and the amount of times a person will post the same thing in the same day! Its not about the art that up to the public to say what they want to by thats not my beef!
My beef is why post family fotos and photos of your pets when this is a art community and a place thats suppose to foster growth with other young and up coming artist and writers and people who want to share their art!
Not the family party or the best girlfriend or the class reunion or the local parade!
Gee there are site for that like Flicker where you can share photos with your family friends and who ever you wanna have looking at your work!
But this is an Art community and as that I think we ought to respect what tis about and do just that post art!
So of us wanna be on a site thats only for artist and who take pride in the fact that the level of art is of a high quality and a place where the outside world can come and say hey they have great stuff there and buy and come back again.
A friend of mine hes not on RB took a look and said to me theirs a lot of stuff on there thats not art an is really not art related!
An he was right too.
He also said a lot of people use the place to post stuff thats full of anger!
So what was I gonna say your wrong? Thats was his opinion based on what he showed me!
But his opinion was what the public will see when they come to look at the site and se that its a mixture of many thing and I think it should be kept to an art site and not posting of things not related to rt but to a place like flicker or face book or them other photo site for sharing fotos.
So I am not masd but someone needs to say hey I love this place and wish you people that don’t really want to be artist maybe go somewhere else to show and just let us have out space. Or get serious about art! Even if your a beginner its cool as long as its about art!
christiane
Exactly what I have been thinking. I love RB for the fact it is a community of artists and those who enjoy it as well. There have been a few times that I have come across what seems to be more of social swap meet. I am truly inspire by the creativity that has crossed my path since joing RB – the feedback has helped tremendously with what I put in exhibits here locally. We all should put our best out there and encourage those who want to grow as an artist.
David Roman replied
Thank you !!! Someone who also understands!
joanw
I hear you and thanks for the reply. :)
David Roman replied
I hope that was better in why I think like this it effects you and me and anyone who’s serious about their work being taken seriously by the outside world.
The not interested bring down the level of our work an this site because it screams bad taste and no talent! An then we fall into the same bowl simply because we are a part of the community guilt by association!
Thank my friend and how was my spelling?
joanw
Probably better than/then mine. LMAO!
David Roman replied
Oh I don’t know about that but I am trying!
Great last work my friend your so talented!
Angi Baker
Well David I guess the way I feel about it is there are many many groups here on this site, all kinds of works have a place here. There are some sites that I would not even visit because of my dislikes hun, but like I said before to each his own. I try my best and that’s all I can do however some folks may not agree that my works belong here either, but we all have some sort of talent and we try… I’m sorry I’m not being a bitch, it’s just that everyone deserves to be here and show their work because they may think it’s the greatest thing they ever did…
David Roman replied
Ok so I am a Bitch now hummm well well well ! OK Fred get her!!!!

I am not aware of the “in house bickering” happening on RB. It is sad to hear of that. As for multiple uploads, I have been guilty, althought not of posting similar images. I take on board what you have said, and will address that. I have posted photos of family, but for no other reason than I believed them to be good images. I have just removed them. I am relatively new to both photography and RB. This site has opened a whole new world to me. It is a place I appreciate, as it allows me to express myself through my photography – allows the opportunity to “speak with images” when words are sometimes difficult to find. David, I am a great admirer of yours. You are “straight down the line” – tell it how you see it. I hear and appreciate what you are saying and the validity of your comments. Please just be aware there may be people in the RB community who might take this on board as a personal finger pointing to them. People don’t need to be discouraged, so a gently gently approach please.
David Roman replied
I am not pointing fingers at anyone I am saying be honest and ask yourself is this good or am i over doing it in my zest to be showing my work!
I think some of us forget we can turn off the very ones that admire us for our talent when we just start to drop fotos or art in thats got no creative value at all and dont live up to their past wonderful work.
Just because they ran out of ideas or got lazy!
See this is where I am concerned about the level of the artist work and their just trying to show work for the sake of being on line or in the publics face all the time.
I don’t want to hurt anyones feelings who I have supported over the months and thats not my intentions but we need to be more honest about why are we showing a piece when in our hearts we know its not up to par.
Some of my fans shoot their dogs and I love them for posting an don’t have a problem because they are not posting 10 shots of the dog in the same position so my beef is not with them and I know they don’t shoot flowers or other stuff but are shooting their dogs and cats as art and I can understand that. But the person who post the same flower or the same sunset or the same thing over and over again! Well thats what I am talking about you force your fans to say ok this person was cool but now they seem to be out of control!
It doesn’t take long to get a person to be turned off!
As for my coming out and saying this I realize that I will lose fans and friends here on RB but I hope they understand this is not personal its about up loading quality work and then if your not sure then don’t post it until your really sure! I wanna support my friends here and I love doing that an being positive about someone’s work even if its not my thing simply because we all need a supportive system here and support helps a person grow and I am all for growing but Please just don’t upload just to see yourself on line.
Don’t drop the same shot on thats is the same as the one you just put on but you moved two feet over or the sun dropped 10 minutes later behind a tree! Gee pick the best one!
Its not too difficult to realize that you bore your viewer with too many repetes like a broken record.
Ok I think I said it right!
Oh and thanks for being a fan I hope your ok with me after this!
I don’t want to hurt anyones feelings but its hard looking and saying your work is good on the same thing too many times! And especially when the level of their work has slipped because of lazyness or just needing to be seen!
See ya and thanks for understanding!
And Seeing my point and I do understand yours too I hope this helped the ones that think I am pointing fingers at them an I see a few who didn’t comment and I know you guys have dogs so I am not talking about you! So don’t get up tight please!
Angi Baker
No hun I didn’t say that at all, and send Fred away…LOL
I know what you are saying hun, it’s just that everyone has a place here in alot of different groups…
David Roman replied
Ok I have to let you have your point of view its valued but some things are not art and a lot of them sites your talking about were created by people who were not artist and liked to snap photos of their kids familys and things like that.
And its cool there is a place for them! But how about another RB for them one called RB family ,Dogs and cats and other stuff not art related.
Hows that?
Then we can have a site thats purely for people that care about art!
Whats art you will say next? I know it I know it I know it!!
Fred just get that girl and take her for a walk!! A long walk!!!LOL
Your point is well taken my friend if its gonna be art then just a simple shot of your cousin standing in front of a wall to me isn’t art!
Maybe a few twist and turns in the face and a few other little things and maybe its art then!
Is Jeff Koons an artist hes making millions of dollars from telling people what he wants then a artist make it for him getting a fraction of what hes paid for their work!
Whos work is it? His (Koons) or the artist?
Humm some will have one view and others will have another !
See we could just sit and say what we feel until the cows come home or until Fred helps you see better!
HAHAHA oh well your view is what it is I think there should be 2 RB one thats a jury RB and you submit your fotos to them for consideratin to be in that group and then a public one for folks that wanna shoot things that are not art related but shots of their family dogs cats and things like that!
If you fail in mantaing a site worthy of the jurys vision your asked to leave to the public site!
Well that wont happen but some where we need to have a level of quality here so its not open to the public as a place to just dump photos!
Well thats my take!
Oh and Fred’s out side your door!!
David Roman replied
Ok Ok Ok Ok your right!!! Freds not answering his phone so your gonna have to just deal with him!LOL
Hes yours for the night!LMAO see ya sweety maybe tomorrow you will think a little clearer!LMAO ROTF see ya !
Anne-Marie Lad...
Another point to consider is when uploading a new image, set it as ‘Hide this work from others ’ for a while to see what it’s like when uploaded. You can always reset it to view by all later. :)
The other thing is that some people upload their family photos in order to actually buy the images from RB themselves. It may not be art as such, but to family, it is precious when t comes from another family member. :)
David Roman replied
Thats true and I don’t look at them fotos I mean people that have been here for awhile and start to up load shot to make an impact and say look at e and the work is not up to par.
See 10 fotos of a bird sitting in a pond because it was there! Humm how many shots of this are you expecting me to comment on and why are you doing this when it says upload only your best work !!
Well whats that mean? I guess up load only your best work!LOL
So you see where I am coming from and I think you know what I mean!
Thanks for coming back!!
Angi Baker
...LOL, I sent him away and he’s coming for you because you’re being mean…
David Roman replied
Yea he just got back and hes in the lock up hooked to the wall! He’ll be happy there in a few hours when Judi get here!
And I am not being mean !To you how could I your a real cool lady so being means not how I would treat you!! Well maybe a little gotta keep you on your toes! But you would like that !!!lMAO oh yea!! Really like it!
Romo
This is so true David and bravo for speaking out…. I love it hear and of course I do like the feedback since it has really helped me improve as well as build my confidence as an Artist…. However I also was feeling like I should be posting something everyday and it is so ironic that I actually was feeling so frustrated yesterday and this morning with the fact that I thought I should be posting something new and when I looked at some of my creations the last few days and some of my older works it just did not seem good enough and I thought to myself do I really want to post that… I also have created enough bagel trees so I did not want to do that again(lol) but no new images came to my head and I feel like I have hit a creative downslide….. This really makes me stop and think before I post another piece just for the sake of posting…. I too may need to look at my site and remove some of my images… This is an art community with so many creative souls and usually with that these souls are a bit sensitive in which people games are so not needed… However as an art community, I think we should support each other and enjoy this community without the games so we all can continue to grow:)
David Roman replied
Exatly Romo we should be here for one another but we have egos here and many who don’t want to offer help in fear that you might get more attention than them!
I don’t come from that view but one of love I want to share and give and help others learn and hope they wanna help me learn too!
So this is what I want for my life.
As for here and the people here we have a mixture of personalitys and this I saw a few months ago when we were all in a up row about the posting of anti American images in the home page.
I saw a whole different RB then and the family took a lot of different views.
But this is about too much posting of the sme image and destroying your value as a respected artist!
And the inside games that people play here.
But I think maybe this post will help a lot of people think first before they post too many of the same things.
Hey Romo thanks for coming my friend good to see ya and I am glad you took time to say hey its not what I want to show, even though I wanna show something
so be happy you took the time to respect your work and yourself as an artist! Thats what I am talking about!! See ya
Anne-Marie Lad...
I DO get what you are saying and it has great validity, David. :) Too much of a good thing and it becomes very boring and tedious. In fact, I have just hidden some of my work from public view, but I can still view AND purchase my own artwork if I so choose. Many people may not be aware of this? Hide from view but you can still view your own work and purchase your own work. Worth keeping in mind!
kalaryder
I wondered why I had not seen much of your stuff recently David. Pity.
Yes, there are some work that is marginal in quality. However, I feel the policy of ‘play nice’ is partly to blame. Honest critiqued comments would be nice to receive. I have asked before on some of my work what would perhaps help to improve and don’t get much back in constructive criticism, don’t get me wrong, I love getting the good comments and without these I would not continue to put work up, as my confidence is such a fragile little thing and is inclined to go into hiding for days or weeks on end.
As for someone else’s reply about uploading 15 or more images at a time, I am guilty of this. I spend two to three days evenings browsing the site to comment on people’s work, moderate my groups almost daily and then treat myself to a couple of ‘upload’ sessions. To me it seems fair.
Cleaning out of my portfolio goes on quite regularly and so does cleaning out my watchlist of people who are not uploading for weeks on end. I am sure that again people have their own time frames for doing just that. I also use as a yardstick, photos in the ‘back’ end of my protfolio that have only received a few views and few comments as not being of a quality suitable and delete them from time to time – this is a useful way to maintain my site.
We all have our own methods.
Back to David’s orginal comment – if an image is not up to scratch, why comment on it? Or, if you feel strongly enough, write a polite BM and point out how that image could be improved.
There was a very lengthy discussion about what is ART several months ago. Most interesting comments on this too.
I used to belong to another photo group where the photos were rated 1-5 by the other artists – very impersonal and very clicky group – this group did not welcome new photographers at all. I stuck with this group, because there was a yearly joining fee, but almost gave up taking photos because of the negativity overall on the group.
RB has a real welcoming warmth to it and this should not be compromised.
I have no idea what the lofty ideals are being presented here, but would hate to think that any new member would be frightened off by reading some of the comments above.
Maybe we should all have in our groups the question ‘do you wish for your work to be critiqued’ and then hope that someone will know how to do just that – I don’t, I am still learning how to use my camera and light and photoshop, but am always glad of help, which I have had offered by some kind souls on RB by BMs.
Apart from all that, yes David, some photos a bit borderline on quality, but not just from new people, but also from those who have been on the for some time. I believe we should monitor our own quality, I don’t think I would like to see a vigilante group stampeding through people’s protfolios.
Ann Morgan
I am glad I stayed out of this one. BUt of course because things seem to be winding down I will stick my nose in here and be my usual invisible self. I agree so much with you David and probably more so than you. You would have to drag me kicking and screaming all the way to a gallery. I don’t want to look at family fotos nor do I like most of the art I see in exhibitions. My secret confession. But here on rb there are proportionately more exceptional artworks than not. WHew I feel much better and confident that no one will respond to me as per usual. Invisible me.
David Roman replied
Well your right an thats what I want to remain here and we who are respected need to say to our friends that we do respect hey your putting up garbage and that they realize we are saying this in good faith with no malace at all.
But some have tender egos here so I have to tip toe and say this in a journal!
Your not included in this as you know my talented friend!
David Roman
I agree with you 100% an the people who I see uploading to many of the same things are the people I respect can you imagine seeing the same thing over again and in some cases its for a few days Gee come on !
I have a HD full of wonderful images but don’t up load them because I was just tired of seeing the same suff from people who would be commenting on my new work and then expecting me to comment on work I have seen before over an over again.
So I just said Oh no I can’t and I don’t wanna not visit them but they are not giving good work!
They are getting lazy.
As for you I enjoy your work and seeing you visit so i don’t have a problem I dont have a real problem but what I want is for the few who do not think before they upload please please think about how this is gonna effect how others look at your work and you!
Thats what I think when I post its important to me to be respected an my work too!
Hope to see ya again my friend.
An thanks for coming to visit me.
Anyway I think you see my view!
Ann Morgan
I have worked so long and hard at my art and to think others just pass off trivia There are sites that would love to have them there. THey should go there and let serious people have their place. I mean it so much. I will never mainstream my art. no compromising for this crazy artist.
David Roman replied
Exactly my friend thats what I am saying get tuff about loving your work and keep the quality at its highest !
See ya
Sharon House
Thanks for your reponse David and the absolute clarification on your comments. I do understand what you are saying about repetitiveness and lowering of the standards of works. I like kalaryders idea of a polite BM.( I also understand a confidence going into hiding that is why I prefer a more gentle approach to things). As a beginner, I would appreciate some honest critiqueing in an appropriate manner.
David, I remain a great admirer and have great respect for your work.
David Roman replied
Thank you thats very comforting because after this you and a few more will be fans but I’ll be on the sh…t list for awhile. LOL oh well such is the problem with having an opinion. But maybe this will open a few eyes it got well over 300 views today so this was worth the effort! And 1 fav!
See ya later an thanks a lot !
I will take a look an give you my opinion if thats what you want just ask me and I’ll come !
Lois Romer
some people may think there work is fantastic where as others might not, its all down to taste, I don’t mind artistic nudes but some nudes are just plain smut. If I feel someones sork isnt great i either dont comment or i bubblemail them. hey I even may have stuff in my portfolio that isnt an Ansell adams or a picasso but hey some painters where not appreciated until they where dead. I agree with upload your best but your best may not be what some others consider best. Herll one i posted as a bit of a fun sold so go figure. We dont want to get to a stage of having RB police.
David Roman replied
Your right who knows what sells but to the ones who have an idea of the quality of their work and see its slipped please just up load the top stuff so its at the highest level.
As for your other points your right about that but do we need to upload the same shot 10 times ? Really do we?
And thats what I am talking about wait until the time over excitement has passed and look at it again and then see if its as fantastic as you thought it was when you were gonna upload all the same images!
So thats what I am talking about not the type of your work thats your business you will be looked over when its not up to par. But the amount of work thats not up to the best quality as your past work!
See ?
so you be good and thanks for coming to visit me.
Lois Romer
also people have genres that they are comfortable with ie sunsets, macro flowers and good for them I see nothing wrong with that.
David Roman replied
Oh I think thats wonderful to have all the groups it makes it a lot beter to se what it is that they like to do.
I have 6 sites so my work has a chance to be seen as I want it to be seen my main site for me is too big I will down size it too so people can see 20 images of what I do in set and then go to the sites that are devoted to that type of work only.
So its not too mixed up with 100’s of images!
See ? Thanks for the fav and your wonderful comments!
Tamme Marshall
I think I’m ready to throw in the towel here – I’m thinking redbubble isn’t worth the effort anymore especially with all the pettiness going on. If you don’t like what someone posts – don’t comment or fave it. No one should be EXPECTING people to comment on their stuff and then get bent out of shape when they don’t. We can’t control what people post and if someone continually posts crap – remove them from your watchlist. I think my work is beautiful (most of the time anyway) but it may not appeal to everyone – oh well, such is life. I never hardly EVER get featured and I never seen a front page with one of my images but I keep trucking along even though a LOT of crap does get these honors. We can’t let this get us down or we’ll end up giving up all together.
AND flowers are my thing so no matter what flowers is MAINLY what you’ll see me uploading.
David Roman replied
You know thats what I am trying to stop people like you and me from walking out and from the pettiness that happens here too!
look I think I shoot lovely flowers I was finally put on the cover of the art issue it wasn’t a flower but one of my weeds its a great shot but my flowers were never featured until this week on one of the flower groups.
And like you I wondered why so many others were on the features list all the time but it is what it is. So i just shoot write and post and then just shoot write and post and not get into the things that go one behing my back. But as you know being here we se more and more and hear more and more as folks drop bombs on us about whats going on who did what to who!
Silly stuff but it is part of the online community!
People with nothing else to do but gossip and not focus on their work and creativity! Thats sad but it is a small group of people who do this but it spoils the feeling as its poisons the people who don’t want to be in this mess but just post and have good feeling about art.
Always someone who wants to make you feel bad for being creative! I get bubble mail asking me how long can I write and will I finally hit a wall?
Like this is what they want?
Gee takes all kinds.
But you gotta say something or it will simply eat at you!
I love it here so I say something ! And this is what this has been about!
Glad you took the time my friend to comment and you know what is the most important thing here its the art and the good vibes that we get from our friends!
See ya later and stay creative and that shot you posted was lovely Miss Tamme!
Mark Peterson
Well written David, I agree 100%
David Roman replied
Thanks Mark that really makes me smile ! Thanks a lot!!
Kim Bender
I read all the comments….............wow…............. It looks like a lot of people including me have the same feelings like you…............It’s very good that you brought this up, because it make people more aware of their actions her on RB.
David Roman replied
As of now 419 views of this topic thats a lot of views and comments ! Glad this has gotten so many people to look at it maybe they will think about what it is that I am saying an make a few changes to their uploading habits. I am glad you have a view Ms Bender and thank you too!
Arletta
Mmm hmm. . and did you read the part where I said I agreed with you; and mentioned the use of sites like Image Shack/journal entries as an alternative? Because, I really did agree with you; just saying .. maybe it’s not total agreement because it could very easily go too far the other way.
Also, I think we were talking about the same woman/artist. So, there, I am agreeing with you some more: I think she’s one of the best I’ve ever seen, a true artist of the highest quality.
David Roman replied
Yea I know what your saying my friend and we do agree on a lot of things and thats really good! The over all response was close to 500 views and many comments and most were in agreement to my post so I hope this was a good thing!
Whatta you think?
Anne-Marie Lad...
Definitely a good thing, David!
Here’s to an increased awareness, more unity and support, more real critique and above all… more ART!!!
David Roman replied
Exactly thats what I am saying too we all win then!
Good to see you again Annemarie
Devalyn Marshall
Hi David! Another artist just told me about this topic and he was laughing at me because I go without downloading for weeks at a time. Then sometimes I get so excited about the art I was working on during the weeks and will admit I am one of the people who do download 6 to 8 pieces in one day, but no more than once per week or every other week. I only download art that I want to sell and art I want to post on my RB gallery. But now after reading David’s well written piece and the comments of others, I will try and download no more than two per day. Hey! I said I will try because I know me and when I get excited I loose my mind. Smiles and Hugs!
David Roman
Well its not about different pieces of art but about the same 10 shots of one piece like a sunset!
Humm too silly and then expect a comment!
Thats what this is about be aware of what your down loading an remember that your fans will stop looking when they notice your down loading just a bunch of repeats!
Anyway you know what I am talking about!
It can be too much to follow when you have a watch list as in my case 9 pages long.
An what I see from many here 9 pages is not that much some have 49 pages can u imagine that?
so be kind to your fan.
so how do I keep up with that many people down loading 10 photos a day ?
I think its too much and have a life out side of RB!LOL
Good to see ya my friend I was missing your comments and your kind smile and your work!!! Good to see ya again!
merlin67
I wasn’t aware of any bickering within the group. I am fairly new to this site and I use it for what I believe it was intended for – that is – for people to view and comment on others’ works. I have had some very constructive comments on here, and that will help me in the future.
Some of the artwork on here doesn’t appeal to me – and that is fine. People have their own personal favourites and that is what makes us all individual.
I think that your origional comment about posting lots of pictures of the same thing was very valid. I can’t see the point in that. But as for the quality of the work – hum – lots of people are not at the level you are, and, as such need to be given a chance. We all start somewhere !
David Roman
Well your right on that an quality of work has to do with the 10 postings of the same thing!
I can’t be the judge of what’s considered quality thats in the eye of the beholder right?
But I think we know a foto of your pet dog and a foto of your girlfriend lying in bed isn’t art?
1 Or is it?
Se I don’t think so and as I said there are sites that deal with family fotos this is suppose to be a Art site unles the need to make dollars becomes the biggest factor then I will understand.
But many of us want to keep this site different from Flicker and the other family site that are everywhere!
So thats my point lets try to keep the level of the site of the highest quality and not one of a hobby site.
Thats why I joined and I am quite sure others joined for the same reason too!
Good to see ya M
