Grand Ma's Love
Grand Ma passed away six months ago it seems like yesterday.
She wanted to live to be one hundred she was just a year away.
I loved to visit with Grand Ma to me she seemed so young.
She had away about her that made time drift away.
She told me silly stories about when she was real young and men wore hats and courted her from a long long time past.
She talked about what it was like to be young way back then.
When simple things like a summers swim or riding on a bike would make conversation last long in to the night.
And an auto was a rich mans toy that really brought strange smiles.
She told me all the stories about how they use to dance.
And put on all their fancy things to maybe find romance and a man would come and take a bow an asked her for a dance !
The hand was all that ever touched but that was strong enough!
And then when the Charlston came to town the people went real wild!
She talked about the first war and what it did to everyone, hiding in the basement crying as bombs fell all around!
She said that was a living hell!
And then she talked about the second one and running from the Russians in to the arms of the USA that was for her a blessing!
But of both she was afraid!
She liked it back in the days when men wore hat’s and dressed real nice not like these kids today!
She looked at me and said poor thing these times are really crazy!!
You’ll never understand the life we lived back not too long ago.
How reading by a fire made a spooky story oh so frighting! Not like sitting at the TV as your brain cells fall to sleep!
She talked about all the things she did with her three dead sisters.
And the one thing she loved the most was planting roses.
She talked about the fun she had and the laughter they all shared in the German Black Forest planting all types of roses.
She told me that the rose to her was the strongest of the flowers!
Because it learned over many long years how to protect its beauty!
She said a thorn was there to keep a man fingers from the attack!
And that the Rose to her was every woman’s sweet young heart usually broken by a man!
She said until a man took extra care to gently take the rose, he would be forever bitten by that neckless that she wore!
Grand Ma’s house was full of roses and that was her special bloom!
Not one time did I come by was a rose not in full view!
So there I was in my Kitchen looking at this rose today, and then it looked right back at me oh God I said no way!
It scared me half to death!
And right then and there I knew exactly who was looking straight at me!

David Roman replied
Hey Kim,
This was the flower in my kitchen window quite a shock to see but it is un-retouched nothing as it was so enjoy! I guess you will have to come back to see the end when other people leave comments see ya!
Oh and glad you liked it!
Kim Bender
Normally you would through the rose away, but actually it is still nice all those colorful folds are quite interesting. Love it!!!!
David Roman replied
Throw the rose away I like it when they get old then I se them as a life lived! They were something before someone killed them for me to enjoy! Right so I give them some respect and let them die an old age!
mimi yoon
it wouldn’t be about the russians or the charlston…
it wouldn’t be about being courted by men wearing hats or being fancied by their simple touches to hands…
but there’ll come the days when i’ll tell my stories too…
the stories that will start with ” when i was young and beautiful…” and end with “rain”...
it’s bitter sweet and i’m weeping…
David Roman replied
Hey MiMi thanks for the poem too thats really sweet! I think my story will be” When I was old but not as old as today” Glad you liked the story its true too Grand Ma was a wonder glad I made videos every time I went she really love that! So I have a history of her and she was an artist too! I should make a RB site of her work it was so cool! Anyway thanks!

I am so sorry to hear about your grandma passing David, my grandma died on June 20 of 1999, and it still seems like yesterday too…what a beautiful tribute to your grandma!!
Jane Keats
You have been busy! Beautiful story, aren’t you glad you spent all that time with her before she was gone, not enough people do that which is why so much wisdom and culture gets lost along the way. Love the wilted rose. :o)
Our trials and triumphs don’t stop at any given age, so when we think about or own, we should admire those that have lived through an entire lifetime of them!
David Roman replied
Your right about that!
I have grand Ma on the window right now shes been photographed 3 times looking really bad I’ll do them as a group one day when I get a good story to put with them! Thanks for your message! Glad you enjoyed it!

Dear David,
I very much liked reading your memories from your grandma … such WONDERFUL Stories to go so BEAUTIFULLY With your photo.
Your story, kind of took me to my grandparents and especially to my grandfather, Yosef who was a GREAT story teller… I’m sorry to say that a lot of his MOST UNIQUE stories I forgot..it’s sad to me. Even though he was simple man, someone wished then to write a book about him.
perhaps we have a small record of him in his last years.
Thanks so much for sharing us with this splendid story and photo, David.
Undoubtedly there are MANY changes of time, ERA, between generations.
Shalom,
NIRA.
David Roman replied
Well as you know life moves on but I think we can share the love so others see the importance of family and keeping our history through story telling! Thanks for sharing your story with me too!

Great story, David. Reminds me so much of my great aunts, who lived through all the same things. They would all be well over 100 years old if they were still alive today.
David Roman replied
Yea its sad to see them pass but we all will hopefully see each other again! But grand Mas still in the kitchen in the corner looking more old than in that foto! As a matter of fact grand mas all dried out!
See ya and thanks for coming!

I looked at this yesterday and read your story…I fell to pieces..I have been feeling enormous pain inside for the past 5 months having lost a dear family member. She loved roses also…Reading your story today has been so inspiring to me…a great comfort..Thank you friend for sharing..
David Roman replied
loss is difficult for the living and comfort is difficult to accept when we don’t accept the passing of a loved one! The healing for each of us is different and we all have the right to take as much time as we need to mourn our loved ones!
I still mourn friends who have been dead for 20 or 30 years and will until I die I think and its ok!
Because I accept that they are gone but I still love them!
So mourn as long as you want! Its your celebration of them.

I LOVE this image… and the fact that you photographed it even though it’s not pristine. The colours in it are amazing. A beautiful tribute. Sad. Beautiful.

LYNETTE EVANS
Your Grandma sounds like a wonderful lady who bloomed and died and portrayed beautifully in this rose which has bloomed and died. Wonderful words David and many wonderful memories, thank you for sharing them with us.
David Roman replied
Yes she was a real sweet woman who offered so much love! I am really happy I took so many silly videos with her so I can have a good cry or laugh as I look at them! Videos I tell ya they really bring the family and the memories together at times an just a quick look back at times when these people are not just a memory anymore but still a strong memory of the moments that made you love them so much just a quick click and they are always imbedded in your life.
But Grand Ma was a special flower for me and still sits in my kitchen older now then the photo you see here!
I can’t get rid of her.
Anyway thank you for your kind comments on my work.
Ellen
Just beautiful!
David Roman replied
Thank you Ellen thats very nice of you! Come visit again!
