Artist's Description

A dead humpback whale washed up at Newport beach today. Apparently it died out at sea and the current washed it into the ocean swimming pool overnight. I didn’t find out about it till after dinner and couldn’t decide weather to go take photos of it or not. I had been meaning to try and get a whale photograph for this site but I was not expecting it to be like this. I thought perhaps it would be a bit gruesome.

I decided to go up anyway, I was expecting to be on the beach by myself but was quite surprised to see about 100 people come to have a look. Perhaps some peoples curiosity was a bit macabre, but I think most people were in awe of this huge 30 tonne animal. I think it is very sad whenever an animal dies, especially one like this. They are not usually given this much respect by people though and that is the story here. For me that is encouraging.
