Don't Mask Your Love Of Opera by

The contrast here really caught my eye – the white mask of the Phantom of the Opera, resting on the black velvet cape of the famous stage character. 1,035 views on 12 April 2014

I shot this in bright sunlight and as you can see from the tonal variations across the mask, the light really made a difference. Not only did it cast beautiful shadows across the mask, it also highlighted the glistening texture of the cape’s fabric.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F8, 1/500 sec, ISO 200, focal length 125mm.

    Excellent capture

  • Thanks so much for the quick response – I shot this the day before the performance. Took about a dozen frame from various angles, but tried this diagonal theme and found it worked really strongly!

    Wonderful capture!

  • Very kind of you to say so. The simplicity was what I wanted to bring out in the image – and the idea that a stage musical could be immediately identified in a simple close-up contrast shot like this.

    This is great!

  • So glad you like this shot, Betty. This was taken a day before the costime was actually donned, so I had a bit of time up my sleeve.

What I really like is that the mask seems almsot as if it’s either peering out from the side, or its other half is caught in the dark. It almost looks as if stardust is trailing off from the cape. Beautiful.

  • What a lyrical comment, Julian. Thank you very much for your appreciation and your very kind words.

Perfect title David, and beautifully shot too!

  • Georgie, you are very kind. Thank you. And don’t forget – one day when you are exploring Southbank, I’ll show you that stained-glass window at St John’s.
