Shrouded by David McMahon

A few moments after I shot this image on Friday morning (15 July 2011) I kept walking, in search of some kind of silhouette to anchor a similar view of the steeple of St Paul’s Cathedral and the central dome of Flinders Street Station shrouded by fog.

The slender, bare branches of a plane tree at Southbank were perfect, as I composed a shot from one side of the river, taking in the landmarks on the other bank.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F13, 1/500 sec, ISO 200, focal length 68mm.

Another stunner David! Just as dramatic and mysterious as your previous image! I especially like the branches in the foreground of this picture. It makes it seem like you are in the clear looking into the fog shrouded area. Awesome Awesome Awesome! Instant fave!

  • Thank you, Robin, for the fave and for this great comment. Yes, I was standing in relatively clear light, but the view across the river was still obscured by the last patches of fog.

These foggy silhouettes of the city architecture are so dramatic! Excellent exposure and great framing and composition with the branches!

  • Many thanks, Joanne. I was lucky that the fog was still considerably thick over the cathedral and the station, although it had cleared where I was walking. So glad you like the result.

Very goo too, but I like the other one more :-) (I think it’s got more of the ‘fantasy world’ feel)

  • Interesting to hear your views, Themis. I concur, which is why I uploaded the other image yesterday. It’s very rare that I upload two images from the same sequence!

    Remarkable, beautiful.

  • Thank you, Betty. It was so quiet when I shot this series of images. It was as if the city was shrouded by silence as well.

    beautiful work!

  • Many thanks, Charmiene. A few minutes after I shot this image, I showed it (on my camera screen) to a colleague – who has asked for a print to put on her desk.

  • Thanks so much, Dawn. The fog was burning off (this was shot just after 9.30am) and I decided to take a chance by deviating and walking through Southbank. Best thing I did that morning!

Fabulous, how lucky were you to be there at that moment. :))

  • Luck had everything to do with this shot, ByzantineHalo – I was not sitting there for hours, waiting for the fog to lift. I just happened to walk past, albeit on a deliberate detour!
