Actually, they’re not real flags, nor even naval bunting. This is simply a mural on a wall at Sydney’s Darling Harbour. It is in the vicinity – but not part of – the nearby Australian Maritime Museum.
As soon as I noticed the old-style naval ensigns, I was reminded of the old semaphore system. The pennants can still be seen in some encyclopedias – if you’re lucky!
