CHALLENGE: Can You Identify This Mystery Object? by

Put on your thinking caps, have as many guesses as you want – but most of all, have fun. Your time starts … NOW!

Solved after six hours by Canadian Red Bubbler Linda Bianic, who worked out that the mystery object is a grand piano. This image was shot in the lobby of the Heritage-listed Art Deco-era Hyatt Hotel in Canberra. I used the curved side of the grand piano to reflect the handrail and stairs that lead to the lower level, and the late-afternoon summer light gave me plenty to depict.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F5.6, 1/18, ISO 800, focal length 78mm.

a railing, a mirror, a staircase, but why and where?

  • Railing is right, staircase is right – so you’re on the right track but not quite there yet, Betty. Do you have the time to keep going with the puzzle?

Looks like a railing to me too !

  • Railing is right, Sean – but it will all make sense once the other objects are identified!

    A lighthouse lamp?
    Neil

  • I like the way you’re thinking, Neil. That’s a top call, but despite the great logic, no, it’s not a lighthouse lamp.

    lens cover in a lighthouse?

  • G’day Dave – no, not a lens cover in a lighthouse, but I can see why you and Neil think so.

Is it some old ship brass work like a compass housing?

  • Not brasswork, Neil, nor a compass housing.

    Light on a apartment stairway/balcony??

  • Hi Linda, I was hoping you’d see this challenge and jump in. No, it’s not a light, but it is a stairway and balcony.

A railing at the top of a light house maybe ?

  • That could be music to my ears, Sean but no, it actually has nothing to do with a lighthouse.

Is it a long way up?

  • This flight of stairs actually goes down, from where I took the shot, Betty. So I am on the top floor – but it is a VERY low building that is a landmark in its surroundings.

Are you inside the Statue of Liberty in NY?

  • Not the State of Liberty, Betty – did the Circle Line Cruise in June last year but didn’t actually visit the Statue. Saving that pleasure for our next trip!
