This shot of a stained-glass window and two empty pews was shot a couple of years ago in tiny St John’s Church here in Southbank, central Melbourne.

It was a quiet afternoon and the priest very kindly allowed me to use my camera inside the place of worship. What I really like about this shot is the soft greenish light reflected on the silhouetted pews.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my image in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 70-300mm lens. F6.7, 1/250 sec, ISO 200, focal length 70mm.

Featured in ART OF GLASS, January 2011.

    loooooooooooove this shot

  • Thanks so much. This window doesn’t get the afternoon sun – hence the moody, muted effect!

    this is fabulous!

  • Very kind of you, Carol – that window is huge – this was just a small detail, because my eye was drawn to the soft green light on the end of the pews.

  • Thank you, Sandra. It’s a beautiful little church, surrounded by office towers. It is a little spiritual (and visual) oasis.

The subdued tones on the modern patterns of the windows is very effective. Tony

  • Very different from the traditional bright hues and familiar designs of customary stain-glass windows. But this little chapel is remarkable for its atmosphere.
