Solve This Puzzle: What Is This Mystery Object? by

Yes, it’s shot through a window. Yes, that’s the figure of a guitar player. Yes, those are lace curtains up the top, in silhouette against the bright light. Yes, that’s the crosspiece of the window.

All you have to do is tell me where I was when I shot this!

Spoiler alert: do not read any further, unless you want the answer revealed.

Solved by Diana-Lee Saville, who correctly answered it was shot at the tiny Victorian town of Glenrowan, famous for being associated with the notorious masked bushranger Ned Kelly.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F9.5, 1/350 sec, ISO 200, focal length 78mm.

I’m gonna go with Western Canada, probably near Calgary. Though practically anywhere in the Southern US would be a reasonable guess too.

  • First in, best dressed, Mojo! Not Western Canada, although Calgary is on my wishlist.

    Long Island?

  • G’day, reigning champ. Nice first guess, but nope.

    Ontario?

  • I like the way you’re thinking. Not Ontario. Not even Muskoka, where my second novel is based!

A’right… well then… if it’s a fairly recent shot then I’d say mid-state New york or possibly Western Maryland.

  • Never been to Maryland (but give me time) and no, not mid-state New York.

New Joisey? (Not that it looks like anywhere I saw there, but still….)

  • Not Noo Joisey.

Okay… so we’ve eliminated a little over half of Canada and two US States — and Melbourne. I’m still leaning towards North America though. Can’t quite picture a cowboy cutout in Quebec, and Saskatchewan and the Yukon Territory (not sure about SK, but I know you spent some time in the YT) are in the half of Canada that’s already been eliminated. The license tag on the pickup looks distinctly US/Canadian though (as opposed the shape and aspect ratio of plates in other parts of the world) and given that I know you were recently in New York City I’m guessing somewhere not too terribly far form there. I notice you very neatly removed most of the license plate (and the sign in the window of the building opposite) with the glazing panes of the window (very clever!) but there’s not a lot else to go on here. Maine license tags have a white background… I suppose that’s as good a next guess as any.

  • Very forensic, Mojo. Cool thought process. Not Quebec. Not Saskatchewan. Not YT either, although you are right – I did spend a week there two years ago. You’re right about the license plate being obscured!!!! But no, it’s not Maine.

I was trying to see if there was a hint of colour on the licence plate as NJ is written in green and different states have different colours on each… but nope…

  • Aha – you’re in line for promotion, Detective-Sergeant!

I know!!! You were inside!!! :))

  • Full marks, Di. Big grin on my face. (In fact, I was feeding my face when I took this shot!)
