Yes, it looks as if the gum tree is growing out of the mailbox – but it isn’t, it’s actually about 50 metres away, on the other side of the road.
This is not ordinary mailbox. Look carefully and you’ll see it’s been carefully crafted from a discarded drill and an old barrel.
I shot this in the Riverina farming region of New South Wales in June 2009. Yes, the light might suggest that it was a warm summer day, but it was a freezing cold winter afternoon. I was driving the Olympic Highway from just outside Albury to Wagga Wagga and then to the town of Temora.
I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F11, 1/350 sec, ISO 200, focal length 78mm.

Awesome find and fantastic title. Great capture David !!
Thank you, Sean. So glad you like the title. This was just outside a rural property. I must check my data to see what the property was called. From memory (and I may be wrong) I think it was called Kingsclere ….

Great shot David. I was looking forward to the bottle of wine this corkscrew was meant to open!
That’s hilarious, Jordan – as soon as I find the bottle of wine, I’ll let you know!

Very interesting composition, and the lighting is good. Wayne
Thanks, Wayne. The light was great that day. I was driving west, right into the sun, at the time. The shadow, as you can see, was really crisp.
