Solve This Puzzle: What Is This Mystery Object? by

Put on your thinking caps, have as many guesses as you want – and most of all, have fun. Your time starts …. NOW!

Spoiler alert: do not read any further, unless you want the answer revealed.

Question 1: Solved in 40 minutes by Scottish Red Bubbler Ranald, who correctly identified it as a bridge, shot through the windscreen of a moving car.

Question 2: What famous bridge is this? Solved in 90 minutes by Ranald, who correctly identified it as the original Howrah Bridge in the Indian city of Kolkata/ Calcutta – a bridge that is mentioned in my first novel, Vegemite Vindaloo, published by Penguin in 2006.

Question 3: What is the precise name for the unique colour of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco? Solved by Vancouver-based Red Bubbler Leslie, who correctly answered `international orange’.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F8, 1/350 sec, ISO 200, focal length 30mm.

    :-) Tower crane?

  • I had to crane my neck for this shot, but it’s not a crane.

OK, let’s start sorting: industrial or entertainment use?

  • I like the way you’re eliminating possibilities. That’s what a champion does. Not entertainment-related.

Hmm… that doesn’t mean ‘industrial’, does it? Scientific? Such as a (radio telescope antenna) or telecommunications?

  • Sorry, I’m not being evasive. It’s not scientific. Purely industrial.

:-( there I was, hoping it was the Lovell… Anyway… what’s closer: port or construction site?
(BTW, you could have a try at the puzzle I posted in Bubble Jeopardy :-) )

  • Just posted a guess there, about three minutes ago! In answer to your question: it’s not a construction site. Nor is it a port.

Looks to me like a bridge, shot through a car window. Good evening/morning.

  • Aye, Sir Ranald – it is indeed a bridge, shot through a car window. Good evening (and Australian morning) to you. Next challenge: tell me which bridge it is! Posting the follow-up question now, with a link to you.

Well, given that it is from the right hand seat, unless you are stuck in traffic, you are in a country where they drive from the left seat. America perhaps. Brooklyn bridge?

  • Very interesting deductions. However, this was shot from the left-hand front seat – which shows just how much I was leaning forward and craning my neck. Not the Brooklyn Bridge, although I did photograph that a few days ago!

Hmm. I wonder if it is the same colour they use on the Forth Bridge. Oxide red?

  • They call it something else, not oxide red – although it could well be derived from oxides.

    Sydney harbour bridge?

  • No sire, not the Sydney Harbour Bridge – we flew over that on our way home, had a brief stopover in Sydney.

    Auckland harbour then.

  • Not Auckland. You’ve seen a few shots in my portfolio from this country.
