Ripley's Believe It Or Knot by David McMahon

This display of pashminas for sale stopped me in my tracks in the Little Italy precinct of New York … but can you spot the odd one out?

What really caught my eye here was not just the colours, but the fact that they had been knotted on a horizontal display pole, with the beautiful fabric displayed in all its glory. It was late in the evening, so the light wasn’t good enough for a close-up view …..

In commerce, creativity is everything – or it should be. I saw a few other street vendors in New York selling pashminas, but this was by far the most creative display of the famous fabric. The “rope-like” overall effect almost evokes Lawrence of Arabia – or Lawrence of Suburbia, as the case may be!

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F5.6, 1/30 sec, ISO 800, focal length 125mm.

  • Thank you, Donna. I did see some other street vendors in NYC selling pashminas, but they were not so creatively displayed!

Great shot David……Very vivid and eyecatching !! Well spotted !!

  • Thanks, Sean …. I was intrigued by the patterns created by those simple knots and the way the soft fabric fell into folds.

Showing them as they would look when worn was definitely a good choice – and it’s well spotted, as usual – well done!

  • I guess the person who should really be congratulated is the stall-holder, but I couldn’t help lining up the shot of the display. My thanks, Themis!
